Wyant tosses gem, but Lions miss title

Justin Wyant knew he had to pitch a strong game Monday night for the Linn-Mar Lions to have any chance of winning a Mississippi Valley Conference title.

He performed admirably, but the Lions fell short anyway.

Wyant tossed a no-hitter as Linn-Mar walloped Kennedy, 12-0 in five innings, in the second game of their MVC doubleheader at the Linn-Mar complex.

Kennedy won the opener, 3-2, and that outcome cost the Lions dearly in the conference race.

Prairie makes 5A regional finals

Joe Yegge has injected new life into the Cedar Rapids Prairie softball program this season as their new head coach.

Now the Hawks are one win away from reaching the Class 5A state tournament, but they'll face a stiff challenge in the regional finals Tuesday night when they visit No.4 Pleasant Valley.

Prairie earned a trip to the regional finals Saturday night by spanking Linn-Mar, 8-2, at the Prairie field.

Bradley's gem lets Lions split

ELDRIDGE - Brandon Bradley tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Linn-Mar to a 5-0 win over North Scott and a split of their non-conference doubleheader Saturday at North Scott.

North Scott won the opener, 2-1.

Brandt Ollinger's infield single scored Jimmy Roth, who had doubled and moved to third on Austin Banks' single, for first run in the Linn-Mar fourth. Jackson Jacobs' sacrifice fly scored Banks.

Anderson picked for USA Volleyball championships

Ellie Anderson, who will be a freshman at Linn-Mar High School this year, has been selected to play in the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on July 18-28.

Anderson, 14, was selected for the second straight year.

The tournament features teams from around the world and various parts of the United States.

Anderson plays for the Six Pack Volleyball Club, which won the state title this spring in the 14U division.

 

Lions fall into tie for Valley lead

DUBUQUE - The Linn-Mar Lions split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Dubuque Hempstead Friday and fell into a tie for first place in the Valley Division.

Linn-Mar won the first game, 8-5. Hempstead captured the second game, 11-1, in five innings.

Linn-Mar and Dubuque Wahlert are tied for first place in the Valley Division standings with 17-7 conference records. The Lions can clinch at least a tie for first place by sweeping a doubleheader from Kennedy Monday night at home.
