Linn-Mar, Prairie split MVC twinbill

The Prairie Hawks and Linn-Mar Lions both hope to have strong baseball teams this season, but right now both of them are simply trying to get a little momentum going and get rolling.

They faced each other Friday night and split their Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill at Prairie.

Linn-Mar won the first game, 7-2. Prairie grabbed the nightcap, 8-2.

Lions blanked at state soccer again

DES MOINES - The Linn-Mar Lions are young. They hope to come back. But truth be told, they're tired of shooting blanks at the girls state soccer tournament.

Linn-Mar failed to mount an attack Thursday and lost to Waukee, 3-0, in the first round of the Class 3A tournament at the Cownie Sports Complex in Des Moines.

Linn-Mar has made four trips to the state tournament and has been shut out in the first round each time.

"Yeah, we wanted it," said sophomore Olivia Garcia, "but we couldn't get it this time."

Garcia's hat trick sends Lions to state

“Wasn’t that an exciting game?” Steve Dickinson, head coach of Linn-Mar’s girls’ soccer team, asked as his team celebrated on the field Monday night, players taking turns posing with the banner marking their advance to this week’s Class 3A state tournament.

The Lions’ 5-2 win over Cedar Falls was exciting entertainment, and for much of the match closer than the final result. Linn-Mar didn’t lead until early in the second half, but sophomore Olivia Garcia’s hat trick proved the difference.

“When it’s an important game, I feel like my intensity picks up,” Garcia said. “We wanted this really bad, but we were really confident going into this game.”
