Fast-starting Sabers down Marion boys

DeWitt Central put together a 22-point first quarter and the Sabers coasted to a 59-42 win over Marion in a battle of Wamac Conference foes at Marion Friday night.

The game did not count in the division standings. DeWitt Central (10-11) is in the East Division and Marion (10-9) is in the West.

Marion played solid defense for the final three quarters, but the Indians could not recover from the 5-of-7  three-point shooting the Sabers put up in the first quarter.

DeWitt Central drubs Marion boys bowlers

Russell Clayton fired a 225 high game for Marion, but the Indians were humbled at home by DeWitt Central, 3236-2625, Friday in boys bowling at Marion Bowl.

DeWitt's Allen Mumm had high game of 277 and shot a 505 series. Lucas Perdieu shot a 494 series and Alby Saliu a 470.

Clayton finished with a team-high 393 series.

Smith hot for Marion girls bowlers in loss

Bre Smith had the hot hand for Marion with games of 187 and 215 for a 402 series, but the Indians tumbled to DeWitt Central, 2537-2254, in girls bowling Friday at Marion Bowl.

Shelby Carrier shot a 405 series to lead DeWitt.

Taylor Lamm shot a 359 series for Marion.

5 Marion gridders pick their colleges

Five Marion High School football players plan to continue their careers in college next season.

Zach Borens has signed with Indiana State, Andrew Davis is headed to Iowa Western Community College and Ethen Herren, Trev Biery and Austin Ashley have all signed with Iowa Central Community College.

Borens is a 6-foot-8, 345-pound offensive lineman. Davis, 6-6, 210, made 50 tackles for Marion last season and carried the ball 44 times for 344 yards and five touchdowns.

Marion boys down CPU

Ty Gunderson scored 17 points and Daly Quinn and Isaac Frazier added 14 apiece to lead Marion past Center Point-Urbana, 57-46, Tuesday night in Wamac Conference boys basketball.

Marion (10-8, 8-5) won the game at the free-throw line. The Indians made 17 of 26 free throws. Center Point-Urbana shot only three free throws.

Josh Jirak's 19 points led CPU (12-7, 10-4).
