McDermott gives Petersen strong endorsement

Bryan Petersen is only 25 years old, just a few years older than the players he'll be leading next season as the interim head coach of the Kirkwood men's basketball team, but Creighton Coach Greg McDermott is confident he'll do a good job.

Petersen played and worked for McDermott at Iowa State, where he was a two-year starter at point guard during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns. He spent a season on McDermott's staff as a graduate assistant before spending two more years on the ISU staff when Fred Hoiberg succeeded McDermott as head coach.

"When we recruited him and he played for us, it was obvious that he was a coach on the floor," said McDermott. "His basketball I.Q. was off the chart.

"That was evident as a player. He was able to carry that over to his coaching career."

Belz, Saladino help Kirkwood roll along

Kirkwood freshmen Samantha Belz and Shyanne Saladino, commonly known around the ballpark as Sam and Shy, could be the No.1 pitcher for lots of junior college softball teams in Iowa and grab their share of the headlines.

The star pitcher at Kirkwood, however, is freshman Amber Logemann, a strikeout whiz who is being wooed by NCAA Division I teams who are aware of her string of no-hitters, one-hitters and double-digit strikeout performances.

If Logemann is 1A, then Belz is 1B and Saladino is 1C.

"We've got a pretty good staff," Coach Joe Yegge acknowledged Sunday after the seventh-ranked Eagles swept Iowa Lakes in an ICCAC doubleheader. "We're pretty fortunate to have them."

Logemann (10-3) tossed a two-hitter and fanned 13 batters as Kirkwood won the opener, 10-0, in five innings.

Belz and Saladino shared the pitching in the nightcap, just like they did at Davenport West, as the Eagles rolled 15-1 in five innings in the nightcap.
