Women's Summer Collegiate Fast-Pitch Softball League

IWSL softball teams beat the heat

The five teams in the Iowa Women's Softball League battled each other and battled the heat Sunday with some interesting results.

Three of the five games were shortened to five innings with the temperature in the mid-90's and another game ended in a scoreless tie.

Ironside Apparel and Hawkeye Convenience Stores battled to a 0-0  deadlock in the first game at Mount Mercy, with both sides flashing  some stellar pitching and defense.

Hawkeye Convenience Stores blanked Emil's Hideaway, 8-0, in the middle game. And Emil's Hideaway turned around and topped Ironside Apparel,  7-1.

Metro Sports Report swept its doubleheader from Bosch Financial, 2-1  and 12-6, at Simpson College in Indianola.

Emil's Hideaway rules the IWSL

Terrific defense and strong pitching were the order of the day in the Iowa Women's Softball League games at Mount Mercy on Sunday.

Unfortunately for the teams that were supposed to play at Simpson College, wet weather won the day in Indianola.

Emil's Hideaway won both of its games at Busse Field in Cedar Rapids, topping Ironside Apparel and Hawkeye Convenience Stores. Hawkeye Convenience Stores defeated Ironside Apparel in the other contest.

Bosch Financial and Metro Sports Report were rained out at Simpson.

IWSL enjoys strong start for Year 2

The second year of the Iowa Women's Softball League got off to an  impressive start Sunday with lots of tight games and lots of smiles.

The Metro Sports Report team in the Central Division and Hawkeye  Convenience Stores in the Eastern Division both posted a pair of  victories to take the early league in the standings.

The IWSL is playing a 16-game season this year with games at Simpson  College and Mount Mercy University. The IWSL is the only women's  summer college softball league in Iowa and is sponsored by Hawkeye  Convenience Stores.

IWSL softball league begins Year 2 on Sunday

The Iowa Women's Softball League starts Year 2 on Sunday with three games at Mount Mercy University and two games at Simpson College.

The IWSL began last year with 52 players, but there are 80 players in the league this season with a waiting list to get in.

The Iowa Women's Softball League is the only summer league in Iowa for women's fast-pitch collegiate softball. The 80 players attend 36 different colleges in 11 states.

The triple-header at Busse Field at Mount Mercy begins at noon with Emil's Hideaway facing Hawkeye Convenience Stores. There will be games at 1:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. as well, with Ironside Apparel joining the mix.
