Women's Summer Collegiate Fast-Pitch Softball League

IWSL softball league begins Year 2 on Sunday

The Iowa Women's Softball League starts Year 2 on Sunday with three games at Mount Mercy University and two games at Simpson College.

The IWSL began last year with 52 players, but there are 80 players in the league this season with a waiting list to get in.

The Iowa Women's Softball League is the only summer league in Iowa for women's fast-pitch collegiate softball. The 80 players attend 36 different colleges in 11 states.

The triple-header at Busse Field at Mount Mercy begins at noon with Emil's Hideaway facing Hawkeye Convenience Stores. There will be games at 1:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. as well, with Ironside Apparel joining the mix.

Erin Kuba signs with Utah State

Erin Kuba has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue her college softball career at Utah State.

Kuba, a Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad, hit .422 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs at Indian Hills Community College this season and was named theĀ  Regional Player of the Year. She also excels on defense at third base.

Utah State is an NCAA Division I program that competes in the Mountain West Conference. The Aggies finished with an 18-34 record this season.

Kuba will be playing in the Iowa Women's Softball League again this summer in Cedar Rapids. She will have two years of eligibility at Utah State after spending two years at Indian Hills.

IWSL is bigger & better for Year 2

The Iowa Women's Softball League has grown tremendously in just a single year. And there's no end in sight.

The rosters, schedules and coaching staff were announced today with the season opener just 19 days away on June 3.

There are 78 players in the league, compared to 52 on Opening Day a year ago, an increase of exactly 50 percent.

There are now two divisions in the IWSL instead of only one, with the Central Division in Indianola joining the Eastern Division in Cedar Rapids.

There are now five teams instead of four. And there's a general buzz in college softball about the only summer league in Iowa.
