Diggins wins Metro Spotlight Award

Derrick Diggins of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Diggins, just a 15-year-old sophomore, is a key member of the Kennedy basketball team and a rising star in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Diggins scored 20 points in a victory at Spirit Lake last Saturday and poured in a career-high 25 points in a victory at Xavier Friday night. He is averaging 16.5 points and has scored in double figures in all four of Kennedy's games.

Prairie boys stun No. 1 Wahlert

Max Smith-Drahos made two free throws with 12 seconds left Tuesday night as Cedar Rapids Prairie upset Dubuque Wahlert, 57-56, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game at Prairie.

Smith-Drahos stepped to the line with a double-bonus opportunity with the Hawks trailing 56-55. He cashed them both to finish the contest with 10 points.

Wahlert has won the last two Class 3A state titles and is ranked No. 1 in the state again this week. The Golden Eagles had won 10 straight games since last season before falling to Prairie.

Cal Clark led Prairie with 11 points as the Hawks raised their records to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the MVC.

Jeff swimmers fall to Rams

The Jefferson boys swimming team won two events in a 116-52 loss to Dubuque Senior on Tuesday at Jefferson.

Luke Hummell won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.83 seconds for the J-Hawks and Paul Hummell won the 100 breaststroke in 11:04.03.

Wash swimmers dunked by Bettendorf

BETTENDORF – The Washington boys swimming team suffered a 114-42 loss to Bettendorf on Tuesday at Bettendorf.

Cameron Kelley won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.26 seconds and Nick Saulnier won the 500 freestyle in 4:48.96 for the Warriors. George Durin and Matt Jackson joined them on the winning 200 freestyle relay, which finished in 1:31.86.

Marion boys fall short at Benton

VAN HORNE – The Marion boys basketball team faded in the second half and lost to Benton Community, 50-33, Tuesday at Benton.

The Indians trailed 23-21 at halftime, but they scored just 12 points in the second half. Marion shot only one free throw in the game.

Baylor Fish, Chase Zielke and Chris Mohwinkle each scored six points for Marion (2-4).
