Beyer tops All-Metro football team

Shaun Beyer of Kennedy has been named the Player of the Year on the 2015 All-Metro Football Team, as selected by the coaches.

Beyer helped Kennedy reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs with his outstanding performances on offense, defense and special teams. He was named first team All-Metro on offense and also was selected as the first-team punter.

Kennedy and Xavier had five first-team picks on the All-Metro team.

Tyler Dralle, Mason Jacobs, Dalles Jacobus, Austin Coates and Beyer made the team from the Kennedy. Nick Stark, Bryce Schulte, Maliki Wilson, Bryce Charipar and Sean Murphy made the top squad from Xavier.

Washington had four first-team selections with Isaiah Nimmers, Tavian Patrick, O'Rien Vance and Rane Weiland.

Jefferson, Linn-Mar and Prairie had three first-team picks. Tavian Rashed, Jared Eivins and Valentino Green made the team from Jefferson. Dallas McFarland, Reese Phillips and Logan Hagmeier made the squad from Linn-Mar. Jalen Rima, Tyler Nunemaker and Taylor Mehmen were honored from Prairie.

Cataldo named Xavier baseball coach

Xavier High School has hired Bob Cataldo as its new varsity baseball coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Cataldo has served as a volunteer assistant for the Xavier varsity baseball program and has additional experience coaching for the baseball and football programs at Dowling Catholic High School in the 1990's.

Cataldo brings experience as a Division I athlete to the table, having participated in football and baseball at Notre Dame from 1988-1991, where he earned his degree in Economics in 1992.

No. 2 Eagles hold off John Wood

The Kirkwood men's basketball team jumped to No. 2 in the national rankings this week, but the Eagles had to fight like heck Wednesday night to stay there.

Josh Meier hit six straight free throws in the final 2 1/2 minutes and blocked a big shot as Kirkwood pulled away from John Wood, 69-61, in a non-conference game at Johnson Hall.

Christensen rolls 438 against J-Hawks

Shania Christensen of Washington had the hot hand in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet against Jefferson on Friday at May City Bowl.

Christensen fired a 438 series with games of 235 and 203 for the Warriors, but Jefferson won the meet by a final tally of 2344 to 2128.

Allie Schirmer led Jefferson with a 388 series.

Jefferson: Allie Schirmer 204+184=388, Maddie Kisling 158/302, Madison Rasmussen 180/351, Hailey Kimble 131/247, Megan Kitzmiller 173/311.

Sturtz, Gardner power Jeff by Wash

Hunter Sturtz fired a 450 series and John Gardner had a 448 Friday as the Jefferson J-Hawks topped Washington, 3025-2526, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at May City Bowl.

Donovan Trimble led Washington with a 406 series.

Gardner rolled the high game for both teams with a 237.
