Cougars cap improbable perfect regular season

WATERLOO – The final chapter of the first perfect regular season in Cedar Rapids Kennedy football history was written with the same fine ink the Cougars used on their journey here.

Stellar, unbending defense, dominating running, timely play action passing and exceptional third down execution on both sides of the ball told the familiar story of Kennedy overwhelming yet another opponent.

In fittingly imperfect, gloomy playing conditions Friday night -- a steady cold mist and light fog -- the Cougars capped off their improbable and historic historic 9-0 season with a 39-13 jet sweep past an undermanned Waterloo West team at Waterloo Memorial Stadium.

With Nick Duehr throwing for two touchdowns and Shaun Beyer sprinting for 166 yards off big wildcat formation plays, the Class 4A District 5 champion Cougars (9-0, 5-0) roared past the Wahawks and into Wednesday's first-round playoff game.

Warriors blitz Burlington, 48-0

It took Washington scatback Tavian Patrick awhile to get off the snide Friday night.

Going into the regular season finale against Burlington at Kingston Stadium, the shifty 5-foot-8 senior needed just 23 yards to reach the 2,000-yard milestone for his career.

He didn’t get there until his sixth carry of the game when he ran for 19 yards with just under two minutes to go in the first half. For good measure, he then dashed 33 yards for a touchdown that was called back for holding but followed right back with 30 more yards.

Another touchdown, this time a 10-yard pass from TJ Vogel to Isaiah Nimmers, was nullified by a penalty. Patrick hit paydirt on the next play, though, and that put Washington up 41-0 at halftime.

Xavier rolls overmatched Indians, 55-0

It couldn't have gone much better Friday night for the Xavier football team.

Facing an undermanned, but game group from Marion, the Saints came in focused. Coming off an emotional 38-35 come-from-behind win over Class 1A power Iowa City Regina, Xavier showed no hint of a letdown.

The Saints scored on their first drive, took a 31-0 halftime lead, then got the game to continuous clock status on the opening play of the second half on a fumble return for a score.

When was finally finished, Xavier had a 55-0 win at Marion and an unbeaten regular season. Standing at 8-0 and a Class 3A, District 4 championship in hand, the Saints move on to the opening round of the playoffs on Wednesday at Saints Field as a No. 1 seed.

The Indians finish at 0-9 and will look to end a 17-game losing streak in 2016.

Nunemaker leads Prairie into playoffs

OTTUMWA - Tyler Nunemaker had a whole bunch of plays and formations to learn this year when coach Mark Bliss arrived at Cedar Rapids Prairie with his concoction of offensive formations from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries that include everything from the single wing to the spread.

Based on Nunemaker's performance Friday night, you'd have to give the Prairie quarterback an A-plus in Advanced Football.

Nunemaker hit 11 of 14 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns as the Hawks belted Ottumwa, 45-20, at Schafer Field to earn a No. 3 seed in the Class 4A playoffs that start Wednesday.

Prairie rolled up 524 yards of total offense with its unique attack that featured direct snaps to four different players when you count the quarterback, two different running backs and wide receiver Jalen Rima.

Nunemaker, a senior, had to learn a completely new playbook when Bliss replaced Mike Morrissey as head coach. Nunemaker took a cram-course during the summer and was ready when practice began in August.

Resurgent J-Hawks roll by Lions

The strategy for the Jefferson football team for Thursday night's showdown with Linn-Mar didn't take long to figure out.

And J-Hawks coach Brian Webb wasn't trying to fool anyone.

"We knew all week our speed was quicker than them, so that is what we did. Pretty simple game plan," he said.

A simple plan that had remarkable results.

Jefferson unofficially rushed for 458 yards on 48 carries, gashing the Lions at every opportunity en route to a 43-16 triumph at Kingston Stadium.

The victory pushes the J-Hawks to 6-3 overall, 3-2 in Class 4A District 6. Linn-Mar falls to 4-5, 3-2. Cedar Falls also finished 3-2 in district play with a 70-13 win over Waterloo East on Thursday at the UNI-Dome.
