Cougars boast top offense and defense

Cedar Rapids Kennedy will be equipped with the Metro area's top offense and defense Friday when the Cougars attempt to finish their first undefeated regular season in school history.

Kennedy, which closes at Waterloo West, is No. 1 in the Metro in total offense (414 yards per game) and total defense (181.1 yards allowed per game). The Cougars (8-0) have allowed just 27 total points in their last six games.

The offense is led by senior running back Tyler Dralle, who has rushed for 1,351 yards and 15 touchdowns. His rushing total is No. 13 in Metro history and No. 2 in Class 4A this season. He is tied for fifth in 4A in touchdowns.

Dralle is likely to pass J.C. Steinberg for second in Kennedy history for single-season rushing yards. Steinberg had 1,377 in 1997. Alex Hillyer has the school record with 1,662 yards in 2012.

The Metro has four of the top 12 scoring teams in 4A, with Washington sixth (38.5), Jefferson eighth (37.3), Kennedy (33.0) and Prairie (32.3).

Kassidy Lovig and Maddie Bagby of Cedar Rapids Kennedy are the co-winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Lovig and Bagby won two events at the Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet in Cedar Falls Saturday. The Cougars made a strong run for the championship and finished second behind Cedar Falls, 413.5 to 408.

Lovig, a freshman, captured the 200 freestyle and swam on the triumphant 400 freestyle relay with Bagby, MacKinzee Macho and Lydia Yang. She also finished second in the 500 freestyle and helped Kennedy place second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Bagby, a junior, claimed the 100 freestyle and swam on the victorious 400 freestyle relay. She also swam on the 200 freestyle relay that placed second and finished fifth in the 200 freestyle.

Both swimmers have battled ailments this season. Lovig has been bothered by bicep tendinitis and Bagby had walking pneumonia earlier in the year, but both feel much better now.

MSR has lots of good 'Friends'

I wasn't sure what to expect when we launched the "Friends of Metro Sports Report.com" campaign two weeks ago, but I certainly never imagined what Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls track coach Bill Calloway has in mind.

Calloway joined "Friends of MSR" this past week and plans to use his Friends T-shirt as an award for one of his athletes next season. We've had a lot of fun covering the J-Hawks, who have broken numerous records with their championship relay teams the last few years.
