Holy mackerel! Saints boot Regina with huge rally

IOWA CITY – Xavier senior kicker Dallas Klein seemed an unlikely hero with his team trailing Iowa City Regina by 28 points at halftime.

That’s what happened, though, as the undefeated Saints launched a stunning comeback in the second half to defeat Regina, 38-35, Friday before a packed house at Regina.

Klein made a 35-yard field goal as time expired to hand Regina just its second defeat in the last 78 games.

“The guys have a lot of heart, so we always knew that we were still in it,” Klein said. “We just wanted to come out here and get back in it play by play and see if we could chip away at it.”

Senior Blake Whitten helped set up the game-winning field goal by intercepting a pass thrown by Regina quarterback Nathan Stenger deep in Xavier territory and returning it to the Xavier 42-yard line.

Cougars clamp down on Cedar Falls

Easy does it, according to Kennedy Mountain Man Dalles Jacobus.

The 6-foot-2, 260-pound senior lineman and his defensive mates held Cedar Falls to 19 yards rushing (two in the second half) as they raised their record to 8-0 Friday night at Kingston Stadium.

“It’s easy when you’ve got all 11 guys doing what they’re supposed to be doing and playing at 100 percent the whole time,” Jacobus said in the locker room following the 21-7 win.

“If you’ve got a weakness here or there, they can attack that. But we don’t have any weak spots. And we pride ourselves on flying to the ball.”

Cougar coach Brian White, who can now claim a district championship in only his second year, couldn’t agree more.

Warriors top City High for district title

IOWA CITY - The Washington Warriors nearly had to pinch themselves after they scored 27 points in the first six minutes of their showdown with Iowa City High on Friday Night at Bates Field.

"I was thinking, what a crazy game," Washington tailback Tavian Patrick said when it was over.

It was crazy all right, but it got crazy scary for awhile, too.

Iowa City High rallied within 33-20 in the third quarter and could have pulled within 33-27 if they hadn't lost a fumble at the 1-yard line with lots of time on the clock.

Coe unveils $23 million project

Eby Fieldhouse was constructed at Coe College in 1929 when the United States was on the eve of the Great Depression and the liberal arts school in northeast Cedar Rapids had approximately 150 student-athletes on campus.

Now it's time for a major makeover that will cost $23 million, making it the largest capital project in college history.

Coe officially unveiled its "Make Your Move" campaign Friday afternoon to build a new performance arena, a new fitness center and a new wrestling room. Eby Fieldhouse will be renovated and used as a recreational and practice facility and all the facilities will be connected to the Clark Racquet Center by a bridge across College Drive.

The cost of the athletic facilities has been pegged at $20 million. In addition, the school plans to spend another $3 million to renovate and expand Hickok Hall, an academic building on campus.

Lions stop Wahawks, clinch playoff spot

They haven't always looked pretty and sometimes they've been their own worst enemy.

But the Linn-Mar Lions have been resilient through it all and now the Lions are just 48 minutes away from hosting a first-round playoff game.

Junior Neme Siaway scored a pair of touchdowns and the defense made some key stops as Linn-Mar defeated Waterloo West, 26-13, in a Class 4A District 5 showdown Friday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The win moved the Lions to 4-4 overall, 3-1 in district play, clinching a playoff berth for the second straight season. A victory Thursday night against Jefferson at Kingston Stadium would give the Lions a runner-up finish in the district and a home game the following Wednesday against the No. 3 team from a neighboring district.
