Prairie Hawks zoom by Muscatine

The outlook did not look bright for the Prairie Hawks when they trailed Muscatine, 41-21, at halftime Friday night at John Wall Field, but the Hawks were just getting warmed up.

Prairie scored 35 straight points in the second half and belted the Muskies, 56-41, in a wild Class 4A District 6 game.

Prairie climbed into a tie for third place in the district with Muscatine with 2-2 records. The Hawks are 3-5 overall heading into the final game of the regular season and the Muskies are 6-2.

Jalen Rima returned from a knee injury and had a big game for Prairie. He carried the ball six times for 172 yards, caught one pass for 70 yards and scored three touchdowns. His scoring plays covered 70, 55 and 94 yards.

Rima, who won the 200 and 400 meter dashes at the Class 4A state track meet last May, has scored 12 touchdowns this season.

Salter helps Mustang women top Grace

Cally Salter scored three goals to lead the Mount Mercy women’s soccer team in a 5-1 win over Grace on Friday at HECO Field at Xavier High School.

Amy McGlynn scored a goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with an assist by Sam Blowers. Salter then scored her hat trick with goals in the 16th, 27th and 58th minutes. Megan Hall and Lizzy Fowler had assists, and one of Salter's goals was unassisted.

Grace scored in the 68th minute, and Maisey McCoy finished the scoring with an unassisted goal for Mount Mercy in the 88th minute.

Mount Mercy out-shot Grace 21-4, and Hannah Schroeder had one save for the Mustangs.

Mount Mercy improved to 4-7-2, while Grace fell to 2-9.

 

Mount Mercy men boot Grace

The Mount Mercy men’s soccer team clobbered Grace, 6-1, Friday at HECO Field at Xavier High School.

Jamie Booth had two goals for the Mustangs, Timon Weidmann and Marco Fichtner each had a goal and an assist, Eike Stermeit and Jamesser Minthor each scored one goal, and Haris Hadzalic, Filip Kovacevic and Evan Moeller each had one assist.

The Mustangs had a huge 30-2 advantage on shots.

Mount Mercy is 12-3, while Grace is 4-9.

   

Eagles drop 3 matches at tourney

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The Kirkwood volleyball team suffered three losses Friday at the Illinois Central Tournament and fell to 23-12 for the season.

Kirkwood lost to Columbus 3-2, Lake Land 3-2 and DMACC 3-0.

The Eagles fell to Columbus 25-21, 25-16, 25-27, 21-25, 15-11. Madsy Richards had 21 kills and 11 digs, Morgan Grimm had 14 kills, Jenna Laxton had 21 digs, and Halle Lueck had 51 assists.

Kirkwood lost to Lake Land 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9. Erin Wenzel had 18 kills, Richards had 10 kills and 10 digs, Alex Miner also had 10 kills, Grimm had 14 digs, Laxton had 11 digs, and Lueck had 45 assists and three blocks.

Kirkwood lost to DMACC 25-21, 25-19, 25-17. Wenzel had 13 kills and 12 digs, Laxton had 19 digs, Richards had 16 digs, and Lueck had 34 assists and 11 digs.

 

RoughRiders suffer first loss to Bucs

DES MOINES – The Des Moines Buccaneers handed the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders their first loss of the season, 3-1, in front of 1,919 fans Friday at Buccaneer Arena.

Des Moines scored goals in all three periods, with Patrick Grasso scoring twice and Zach Jordan once.

Riese Zmolek got the RoughRiders on the board in the third period with an assist from Jack Ahcan.

The Buccaneers held a 21-20 edge on shots. Des Moines goalie Jan Ruzicka made 19 saves. Benjamin Blacker had 18 saves for Cedar Rapids.
