Bach leads Marion to Wamac title

INDEPENDENCE - Maddie Bach of Marion High School captured top honors at the Wamac Conference cross country meet Thursday and led the Indians to the team championship in Independence.

Bach, a senior, covered the 5K course in 18 minutes, 47 seconds. She defeated Julie Hollensbe of Williamsburg by 13 seconds.

Marion claimed the title with 84 points, edging Vinton-Shellsburg (92) and Mount Vernon-Lisbon (102). Hallie Kephart finished ninth for Marion.

Fopma takes 2nd at Wamac boys race

INDEPENDENCE - Jeremy Fopma of Marion placed second at the Wamac Conference cross country meet Thursday in Independence.

Reid Smock of Mount Vernon/Lisbon won the 5K race in 16 minutes, 14 seconds. Fopma, a sophomore, finished 14 seconds later in 16:28.

Mount Vernon/Lisbon won the team championship. Marion placed sixth out of 16 teams. Myles Fopma, one of Marion's top runners, did not compete in the conference meet.

Anderson wins Metro Spotlight Award

Macy Anderson of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Anderson, a senior, is a key member of the Kennedy volleyball team that is ranked No. 5 in Class 5A with a 21-8 overall record.

Anderson is the leading kill-shot artist for the balanced Cougars this year with 168. She had 11 kills Tuesday night when Kennedy swept Dubuque Senior, 3-0, to finish its Valley Division slate with a perfect 6-0 record.

Kennedy won its first Mississippi Valley Conference title this year since 2006. It is only the second MVC crown in school history.

'Friends of MSR' gets off to good start

I am pleased to announce that the "Friends of Metro Sports Report.com" campaign has gotten off to a good start.

Pleased, and relieved.

There's always a danger of starting a campaign like this and having it fall on deaf ears. That would have been embarrassing. Unlikely in this case, but still embarrassing.

No. 7 Cougars sink Linn-Mar

The seventh-ranked Kennedy Cougars won all 12 events Tuesday night and dunked Linn-Mar, 137-48, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet at Kennedy.

Maddie Bagby was a four-time champ for Kennedy. She captured the 100 free and 200 free and swam on the triumphant 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

MacKinzee Macho and Kassidy Lovig were triple-champs for the Cougars. Jessica Williams, Raquel Green and Taylor Golden participated in two victories.
