Lion girls net win over Warriors

Claire Larson had a goal and two assists to lead Linn-Mar to a 3-0 Mississippi Valley Conference girls soccer victory over Washington on Thursday at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Kayla Kvach and Olivia Garcia also scored for the Lions. Emily Menges had an assist as Linn-Mar scored all three of its goals in the first half.

 

 

Lions topple Washington boys, 3-1

Ben Johnson scored two goals and Leroy Enzugusi added another as Linn-Mar defeated Washington, 3-1, in Mississippi Conference boys soccer action Thursday at Kingston Stadium.

Trevor Thulin scored for the Warriors on an assist from Aroni Niyikiza.

 

Xavier's Jasper, doubles team to state

Xavier's Allison Jasper won the Class 1A regional girls singles title and Jeanne and Claire Bouchard won the doubles crown Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center.

Jasper downed Camanche's Maddie Parker, 6-1, 6-0, in the final as both advanced to state. The Bouchards were 6-4, 6-3 winners over Camanche's Page Edens and Alexa DeVries. Both teams move on to the state meet.

   

Saints solve Hawks in soccer showdown

The Xavier Saints found the secret to scoring goals against the Prairie Hawks Tuesday.

They scored seven of them.

The Saints rolled by the Hawks, 7-1, in a showdown of Mississippi Valley Conference powers at Heco Field on the Xavier campus.

Prairie had surrendered only eight goals in 13 games this season, but Xavier nearly matched that total in a single outing.

Nolan Armstrong led the onslaught for the Saints with two goals. Mason Hoxie, Luke Duball, Josh Hoffmann, Will Hanigan and Luke Koechner also found the net for Xavier.

Peoria Chiefs 'slam' Kernels, 7-5

PEORIA, Ill. - Steve Bean’s grand slam in the sixth inning propelled the Peoria Chiefs to a 7-5 win over the Kernels Tuesday in a Midwest League game before 6,562 fans at Dozer Park.

Trey Vavra hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run for the Kernels in the third inning.

The Kernels (23-16) led 4-2 going into the sixth inning, but Bean’s grand slam put Peoria in front 6-4. Bean’s line drive got over the wall in right field.

Vavra’s three-run homer in the third gave the Kernels a 4-2 lead. With two runners on and Peoria leading 2-1, Vavra’s line drive went into the gap in right-center and became lodged in the wall.
