Gonsalves gem lifts Kernels

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - Stephen Gonsalves allowed just one hit and struck out 11 in seven innings on Thursday afternoon as the Cedar Rapids Kernels completed the three-game sweep with a 3-0 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before 476 fans at Fox Cities Stadium.

The lone hit Wisconsin hit was a bunt single in in the fourth inning. Trevor Hildenberger tossed two perfect innings for his first save. The Kernels have won four games in a row. Gonsalves (2-0) has now struck out at least nine in all three of his starts, totaling 30 strikeouts and 11 hits allowed in 20 innings Wisconsin had three base runners on Thursday.

Gonsalves retired the first 10 hitters before Brandon Diaz reached with a bunt single that rolled up the first base line in the fourth inning. He then hit Dustin DeMuth with a pitch. Following the hit batter, Gonsalves retired the next 10 Timber Rattlers before walking Elvis Rubio in the seventh inning. That was the final Wisconsin hitter to reach base.

Cougars down No. 1 Linn-Mar, 2-1

Alyssa Drewelow and Alissa Waterhouse scored first-half goals and Kennedy made them stand up as the Cougars upset top-ranked and previously unbeaten Linn-Mar, 2-1, on Thursday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Kenadee Dekko had the assist for the No. 7 Cougars, the defending Class 3A state champion.

Linn-Mar scored when Kennedy put the ball in its own net midway through the second half, but the Lions, who were ousted by the Cougars in the regional final last season, couldn't come up with the tying goal.

No.9 Prairie boots No.14 Warriors

The Cedar Rapids Prairie boys soccer team is still perfect for the 2015 campaign.

Perfect record, perfect defense.

The ninth-ranked Hawks blanked No.14 Washington, 2-0, at Prairie Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Prairie.

Prairie raised its records to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the league. Most remarkably, the Hawks have outscored their opponents 44-0 this season.

Logan Rinderknecht fired in both goals for Prairie in the second half. Steve Fritz and Joe Vizzini collected assists. Alec Balta pitched the shutout in goal.

Calloway's 'best group' ready for Drake

After more than four decades of training high school runners, Jefferson girls track coach Bill Calloway knows he’s no miracle worker.

Like height, you can’t teach pure speed.

“I can’t make a quarter horse into a thoroughbred,” he says. “But I can help make a quarter horse run faster.”

Year after year – and this one is no exception – Coach Calloway trots out a stable of sprinters that are almost always among the best in the state. More than that, he has a knack for getting them to run faster together as a team.
