Kohawks split with No.18 Central

Paige Zahner and Taylor Riedl belted home runs Tuesday as the Coe softball team split an Iowa Conference doubleheader with 18th-ranked Central at Clark Field.

Central won the first game, 10-4. The Kohawks captured the nightcap, 8-6.

The split left Coe at 22-14 overall and 6-6 in the league. Central is 26-9 overall and 7-3 in the conference.

Reuter tosses gem as Coe splits

STORM LAKE - AJ Reuter had a strong outing for the Coe baseball team Tuesday in a 4-1 victory over Buena Vista in the first game of an Iowa Conference doubleheader in Storm Lake.

Buena Vista won the second game, 2-1.

Reuter (3-1) tossed a complete game in the opener. He struck out seven batters, walked one and allowed just one earned run.

Eagles overpower DMACC for league title

The Kirkwood Eagles hosted DMACC in a showdown for the conference softball title Monday, but the Eagles had different ideas.

It wasn't a showdown. It was a showcase.

The Eagles belted eight home runs and drubbed DMACC in a doubleheader, 9-1 and 12-2, on a wet, blustery day at the Kirkwood diamond to grab the league title with overwhelming power.

"They were ready," said Kirkwood Coach Joe Yegge, who claimed his sixth conference title in eight years at the school. "They've been talking about these games for the last week."

Kirkwood is ranked No. 10 in the Division II ranks of junior college softball and DMACC is ranked fifth, but this was a mismatch of major dimensions. Both games ended early due to the eight-run mercy rule as the Eagles showed no mercy all day.

Kernels avoid sweep, top Bees, 5-2

BURLINGTON - Nick Gordon and Tanner English had three hits apiece and Zack Granite came through with a key triple in the seventh innings as the Cedar Rapids Kernels avoided a sweep with a 5-2 win over the Burlington Bees in a Midwest League game Monday at Community Field.

The matinee crowd of 1,705 watched three Kernels' pitchers limit the Bees to eight well-spaced hits. Gordon drove home three runs, raising his RBI total to 13 on the young season. English, batting in the No. 9 spot, also scored a pair of runs for the Kernels (8-4).

UNC's Paige undergoes ankle surgery

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — University of North Carolina men’s basketball guard Marcus Paige underwent successful arthroscopic surgery today to remove bone spurs in his right ankle according to a release on the UNC basketball website.

Paige, a graduate of Linn-Mar High School, is expected to resume basketball activities this summer.

The junior played in all 38 games this year, averaged a team-high 14.1 points and led UNC with 170 assists. He earned Carolina’s Most Valuable Player honors for the second consecutive year.
