Kennedy boys rally to beat Rams 78-74

DUBUQUE – The Kennedy boys basketball team rallied with a 24-13 run in the third quarter and held on to beat Dubuque Senior, 78-74, Tuesday at Senior.

The Rams led 41-33 at halftime before the Cougars fought back.

Zach Daniels sank six 3-point goals and finished with 24 points for Kennedy (10-4). Brendon Manning scored 17 points and Drake Brewster added 12.

Luke McDonnell scored 26 points with 16 rebounds for the Rams (7-6). Justin Blackman had 21 points and Jayden Davis added 18.

KENNEDY (78): Daniels 7 4-5 24, Heisler 3 0-0 7, Murdock 3 0-0 7, Gardner 2 1-2 5, Techau 0 0-0 0, Diggins 1 0-0 3, Brewster 3 4-4 12, Manning 8 0-0 17, Girling 0 3-4 3. Totals 27 12-15 78.

Mustangs drop openers in Florida

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Mount Mercy University baseball team opened the 2015 season Monday by dropping a pair of tight games to 13th-ranked Southeastern University in an NAIA twinbill in Lakeland, Fla.

Southeastern pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the opener in extra innings, 6-5. Southeastern took the second game, 9-6.

Jack Dahm made his debut as Mount Mercy's new head coach in the doubleheader.

Christian Knox went 3-for-8 in the doubleheader for Mount Mercy (0-2) and drove in four runs.

Marion girls pummel Vinton-Shellsburg

Four players scored in double digits as the Class 4A No. 15 Marion girls basketball team swamped Vinton-Shellsburg, 69-34, Tuesday at Marion.

Chloe Rice led the Indians (13-4) with 17 points. Caitlyn Smith and Michalyn Mohr each scored 14 points and Mia Laube chipped in 10.

Maci Griffith had 12 points for the Vikings (2-15).

VINTON-SHELLSBURG (34): Burroughs 2 0-0 4, Mier 1 0-0 2, Griffith 5 1-2 12, Gloede 4 0-0 8, Speidel 1 2-4 4, Cornell 1 2-2 4, Howes-Vonstein 0 0-0 0, Blake 0 0-0 0, Mull 0 0-0 0. Totals 14 5-8 34.

Cedar Valley loses Hembera for season

Cedar Valley Christian senior Shelby Hembera has torn tendons in her left ankle and will be lost for the rest of the basketball season, Coach Craig Foote reported Monday morning.

Hembera was injured Jan. 16 in a game against Easton Valley in Preston when she attempted a shot and landed on another player's foot. The injury originally was diagnosed as a sprained ankle, but an MRI revealed the torn tendons.

Hembera may need surgery to repair the injury, according to Foote.

Hembera, an all-state forward, leads the state in scoring at 30.3 points per game. She also led the state in scoring last year as a junior.

Engle leads Metro scoring derby

Craig Engle of Marion has a slight lead over Adam McDermott of Xavier in the scoring derby for Metro boys basketball this week.

Engle is averaging 16.4 points and McDermott is a click behind at 16.3 as the season moves into the last week of January. Jordan Bohannon of Linn-Mar is third (15.4), Nic Uhlir of Linn-Mar is fourth (14.8) and Brendon Manning of Kennedy is fifth (13.7).

Tom Scroggs of Cedar Valley Christian is the Metro rebounding leader at 7.9 per game. Cole Murdock of Kennedy leads in assists (53) and Bohannon has the most 3-pointers (37).
