Warriors make strides at MVC swim

Swimming is a curious sport.

Iowa City West set eight records at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet Saturday at the Linn-Mar Aquatic Center, yet Dubuque Senior claimed the championship despite winning only one event.

The Washington Warriors did not win any races Saturday, yet Coach Chris Cruise was all smiles after the event.

It's the nature of the sport as teams point toward the state meet in Marshalltown next month.

Iowa City West, with its glittering array of stars, will be the heavy favorite to win another state title despite finishing second in its own conference meet. And the Washington Warriors, with rich tradition on their side, are probably a lot stronger than their 13th spot in the power rankings would indicate.

Lassen pours in 32 for No.9 Eagles

CRESTON - Matt Lassen made seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points Saturday as No. 9 Kirkwood belted Southwestern, 92-68, in an ICCAC conference game in Creston.

Lassen, a sophomore from Linn-Mar, shot 7-for-8 on 3-pointers and was 5-for-5 at the foul line.

Jordan Ashton popped in five 3-pointers and scored 16 points for Kirkwood (16-4, 3-1). Jacob Olson hit two triples for the Eagles, giving them 14 in the game.

Hunter Rhodes contributed 12 points and five assists. Ron Singleton and Joe Tagarelli had seven rebounds. Kirkwood led at halftime, 50-28.

Hansche sinks 8 treys in Coe win

PELLA – Mickey Hansche had eight 3-point goals for 24 points to lead the Coe College women’s basketball team in a 62-52 win over Central College on Saturday at Kuyper Gym.

Hansche was 8-of-14 from 3-point range to tie her own school record for 3-pointers in a game.

Megan Hayes had two blocked shots for the Kohawks to break the school record for career blocks at 150.

Aleena Hobbs had 16 points and nine rebounds for Coe (12-5, 5-1). Courteney McCrary added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Coe men top Central 80-73 in OT

PELLA – The Coe College men’s basketball team opened the overtime period with a 6-0 run with key baskets by Christian Fahey and JT Vonderhaar and held on to beat Central College 80-73 Saturday in an Iowa Conference game at Kuyper Gym.

Vonderhaar finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds for the Kohawks (11-6, 5-1). Jacob Timm had 20 points and nine rebounds. Fahey finished with 10 points.

Colby Taylor led Central College (9-8, 2-4) with 22 points.

RoughRiders stopped by Youngstown

Youngstown scored the last three goals of the game Friday night and tripped the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 5-3, in a USHL game before 2,715 fans at the Ice Arena.

The RoughRiders took a 3-2 lead in the third period on a goal by Adam Gaudette, but Youngstown tied the game on a short-handed goal by Ryan Lomberg and took a 4-3 edge with 2:19 left on a tally by Kiefer Sherwood.

Youngstown scored its final goal into an empty net with one second remaining.

Cedar Rapids began the game with a five-game winning streak. The RoughRiders fell to 26-9-0 for 52 points, good for a five-point lead over Muskegon for first place in the Eastern Conference. Youngstown has an 18-11-5 mark for 41 points in the Eastern Conference.
