Linn-Mar girls nipped by Wahlert
Ranked as high as fifth in the state two weeks ago, the Linn-Mar girls dropped their fourth straight game Friday night at home to an undersized Dubuque Wahlert squad that had trouble holding onto the ball or shooting straight.
“They played harder than us,” said frustrated Linn-Mar Coach Jaime (Printy) Brandt after the 34-33 lackluster loss. “We need a gut check. We have to figure out what’s going on.”
Wahlert (6-9) came into the game “struggling,” according to veteran Coach Kris Spiegler.
“We’ve been looking for our identity,” she said. “But, oh my gosh, this win is huge.”
After taking a quick 3-0 lead, the Golden Eagles trailed most of the way. With 11 turnovers in the first half alone (almost all on bad passes), they fell behind 21-11 at halftime and 27-13 soon after.
Over an eight-minute span, though, the Lions frittered away their lead. They missed every shot they took, while Wahlert went on a 15-0 run to go ahead 28-27 with 5:20 to go.
