No.1 Saints shocked by Western Dubuque

Everyone who prematurely awarded the Class 3A football title to the Xavier Saints this year received a cold slap in the face Friday night.

So did the Saints.

The Western Dubuque Bobcats stole a page from Xavier's defensive playbook and stunned the top-ranked Saints, 7-6, in a chilly homecoming game at Saints Field.

Xavier reached the Class 4A championship game in 2012 and 2013, and when the Saints dropped to Class 3A this year a lot of folks thought they'd breeze to a state title against inferior competition.

Xavier had rolled by four Class 3A opponents this season by a combined score of 166-15 heading into Friday night, but Western Dubuque had other ideas about becoming cannon fodder for the hosts.

No.1 Warriors pummel Ottumwa

It’s one thing to run over a totally out-classed opponent.

It’s quite another to completely dominate a team proven to be good.

The Class 4A top-ranked Washington Warriors showed their mettle at Kingston Stadium Friday by stopping Ottumwa’s previously high-powered offense and seemingly scoring at will against a tested defense.

The final was 40-2, but the game was not as close as the score might indicate.

The Warriors (6-0) made touchdowns on six of their first eight possessions. They punted once and had a pass intercepted in the end zone as they were about to score again.

With a 40-point lead midway through the third quarter, subs played out the rest of the way as the continuous clock kept running to the quick ending.

RoughRiders trim Muskegon, 4-3

One thing looks pretty certain when it comes to the 2014-15 edition of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

You better bring some speed to the rink in an effort to keep up. For two periods Friday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, Muskegon was able to keep up, but in the third period it was the Riders who got to the loose pucks just a bit quicker.

Aaron Thow's goal from the slot less than two minutes into the final period broke a 3-3 tie and the Riders (2-0) held the visitors off the rest of the way to post a 4-3 win before 1,467 fans.

"I thought it was a real good hockey game," said Riders Coach Mark Carlson. "Muskegon is a good club. It was a good up and down game and we'll see what we can improve on for tomorrow."

The same two teams meet at the Ice Arena Saturday night at 7:05.

Lions overcome slow start to top Kennedy

Linn-Mar had to fight two tough opponents Thursday night at Kingston Stadium.

The first foe was no surprise. Despite coming in winless, Kennedy came out strong, grabbing a 14-0 second quarter lead.

Not only did the Lions have to overcome the Cougars, they had to overcome themselves. Linn-Mar was called for six penalties in the first quarter alone.

"The penalties killed us early," admitted Linn-Mar senior Trevor Noble. "Our defense was playing great, but once we got that turnover just before halftime, we knew we had to score."

Kennedy fumbled in the final 40 seconds of the half and Noble caught a 23-yard scoring strike from Ryan Schmidt, getting the Lions on the board. The second half was all Linn-Mar as the defense forced a pair of turnovers and the offense came alive. The No. 10 Lions ended up scoring 29 unanswered points en route to a 29-14 victory.

Cedar Falls too tough for J-Hawks

CEDAR FALLS - Nobody has to tell Brian Webb about the Cedar Falls Tigers and how good they are year after year.

Webb played his high school football at Cedar Falls and he coached for a year at his alma mater, so he knew exactly what to expect from the Tigers in the UNI-Dome Thursday night.

As it turned out, it was not good for Webb and his Jefferson J-Hawks.

Cedar Falls scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and raced by the J-Hawks, 35-17, in a Class 4A district game.

"From the day I left in '98 to what it is now - probably 15 years - their D-ends are all the same, their fullbacks are all the same, their line is all the same. It's just cookie-cutter," said Webb.

"What a great way to build a program, when you have cookie-cutter kids every year to replace the old ones. They're a good team."

Hall of Fame Coach Pat Mitchell retired at Cedar Falls after the 2013 season due to health reasons, but Brad Remmert - Mitchell's co-head coach for many years - succeeded his mentor and has led the Tigers to a 5-1 start this year.
