17 Metro boys make all-state soccer

The overall strength of boys soccer in the Metro area was demonstrated by the all-state teams announced Saturday by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Seventeen Metro players were honored on the squad, including six players who were named first team all-state.

The first-team selections are Killian Magee of Kennedy, Jacob Bjornsen of Washington, Mike Eken of Washington and Jared Belin of Linn-Mar in Class 3A. Connor Ramlo of Xavier and Enoch Duval of Marion made the top unit in Class 2A.

Xavier girls net 3rd at state

IOWA CITY - The Xavier High School girls tennis team defeated Camanche, 5-3, to claim third place at the Class 1A state meet at the University of Iowa courts Saturday.

The third-place finish is the best in school history, according to Coach Matt Foxhoven.

The Saints were trimmed by Waterloo Columbus, 5-3, in the semifinals Saturday before beating Camanche in the consolation round.

Kernels fall 8 games below .500

GENEVA, Ill. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost to the Kane County Cougars, 5-2, Saturday night before 6,706 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to fall eight games under .500 with a 27-35 record.

Lewis Thorpe made his pitching debut for the Kernels and was touched for five runs in 4.2 innings. He allowed six hits and three walks, with one strikeout.

Chad Christensen hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to pull the Kernels within 5-2, but the rally ended there.

Midnight Hoops league starts Sunday

The annual Midnight Hoops college basketball summer league will begin its season Sunday with three games at Mount Mercy University at 3 p.m, 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Players from 16 colleges will be featured in the league this year, including players from Coe, Kirkwood, Mount Mercy and Cornell.

There are six teams in the league and 54 players.

State soccer postponed to Tuesday

DES MOINES - The final round of the 2014 boys state soccer tournament was postponed by rain and inclement weather Saturday and rescheduled for Tuesday at Cownie Park in Des Moines.

The Xavier Saints (10-10) will face Waverly-Shell Rock (16-2) in the consolation game for third place in Class 2A on Field 6 Tuesday at 1:40 p.m.

The Washington Warriors (15-5) will meet the Linn-Mar Lions (18-4) in the consolation game for third place in Class 3A on Field 6 Tuesday at 4:10 p.m.

The championship matches feature Mid-Prairie (17-2) against Iowa City Regina (15-3) in Class 1A at 12:05 p.m., Norwalk (14-6) against Perry (16-3) in Class 2A at 2:30 p.m., and Johnston (21-0) against Iowa City West (20-1) at 5 p.m.
