Warriors get dramatic win at state

DES MOINES - Connor Geuder never expected to get a chance to win the game for the Washington Warriors in their PK Shootout against Sioux City West Thursday at the state soccer tournament.

He's mighty glad he did.

Geuder connected as the No. 7 man for the Warriors in the Shootout and then joined the celebration when Washington goalie Gunnar Lenzen stopped Sioux City West's seventh man for a dramatic 2-1 victory in the opening round of the Class 3A tournament in Des Moines.

Each team gets five shooters for a PK round when a game is tied after two overtimes. That's usually enough shooters to settle things, but not this time.

Geuder knew he was seventh in line, but never figured it would get that far.

Lions boot Little Hawks at state

DES MOINES - In their first state tournament appearance since 2008, the underdog Linn-Mar boys pounced on Iowa City High right from the start and
never let up.

Neither team scored in a cat-and-mouse first half, but the Lions kept up the pressure and prevailed 3-1 Friday evening in the Class 3A opening round at the Cownie Soccer Park.

By spanking the No. 2 Little Hawks (15-3), Linn-Mar now faces top-ranked Johnston (20-0) Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.

"It will be a similar situation," said an exuberant Linn-Mar Coach Corey Brinkmeyer. "We'll be the underdog. We'll get hydrated and rested.

"But we will be ready," he vowed.

Coming into the tourney ranked No. 4 at 17-3, the Lions had lost to City High 1-0 just two weeks ago.

Saints clip No. 1 seed Heelan in OT

DES MOINES - Jeremy Jacoby was the most relieved member of the Xavier soccer team at the Class 2A state tournament Thursday afternoon at Cownie Park in Des Moines.

Jacoby accidentally scored a goal for Sioux City Heelan to help the Crusaders stay in the match, so he was breathing a lot easier after the Saints trimmed Heelan, 3-2, in overtime on a goal by Jerry Duball.

Jacoby tried to clear the ball from the Xavier goal mouth in the second half with a header, but he inadvertently steered the ball into his own goal to let Heelan tie the game, 1-1.

"It was terrible, but it happens," said Jacoby. "But we got the win and can breathe another day."

Stewart recalls stress of 2013 draft

The 2014 Major League Baseball draft begins Thursday and hundreds of high school and college ballplayers are counting the hours before the Houston Astros go on the clock with the first pick.

One year ago, Kohl Stewart was an 18-year-old pitcher anxiously awaiting the draft. Stewart was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the fourth overall pick of the first round and is a couple of months into his first full year of professional baseball.
