No.1 Lions top J-Hawks in regional

With a season-ending loss to Linn-Mar Wednesday night, Jefferson soccer coach Richard Appleby said goal keeper Maddy Webber needs some time off.

“She’s pretty beat up,” said the first-year J-Hawk mentor, who spent the previous five years as a Linn-Mar assistant. “She has a lot of aches and pains. It’s going to take her a month or two just to heal.

"I wish we could have given her a little more defense this year.”

The young and inexperienced Jefferson squad finished 3-15 by losing to the Lions, 4-1, in a regional semifinal at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Prairie girls nip Wash in Shootout

Hannah Kousheh had several chances to score goals for the Prairie Hawks against Washington Wednesday night in the Class 3A regional semifinals, but she was unable to connect during 80 minutes of regulation or 20 minutes of overtime.

"I was getting quite frustrated," she confessed later.

It had a happy ending for Kousheh and the Hawks.

Prairie nudged Washington, 2-1, in a PK Shootout at John Wall Field and Hannah got poetic justice by scoring the game-winner in the Shootout.

The ninth-ranked Hawks (13-3) will play at No.4 Dubuque Hempstead Monday night in the regional finals, with the winner advancing to the Class 3A state tournament.

Hayden nets hat trick as Cougars roll

Sydney Hayden scored three goals Wednesday night as Kennedy rolled by Waterloo West, 10-0, in the regional semifinals of the Class 3A girls soccer tournament at Kennedy.

The Cougars will face No.1 Linn-Mar at Linn-Mar Stadium Monday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

Alyssa Drewelow scored two goals for Kennedy. Kasey Dekko, Kaela Dickerman, Emily Feltes, Emily Sass and Jamie Vogl notched one goal apiece.

Dickerson collected two assists. Dekko, Feltes, Jordan Holmes and Morgan Petsche also had assists.

   

6 ejected as Kernels lose to Rattlers

APPLETON, Wis. - There was a little extra excitement at the ballpark Wednesday night as the Cedar Rapids Kernels lost to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 6-4, before 4,366 fans at Fox Cities Stadium.

Six players and coaches were ejected in the sixth inning when both benches and bullpens cleared, although no punches were thrown.

Michael Ratterree led off the bottom of the sixth inning for Wisconsin and was hit by a pitch by Kernels starter Aaron Slegers. Clint Coulter, the next batter, hit a two-run homer to tie the game 4-4.

Bertsch, Saints dominate 4A golf

AMES - Maddie Bertsch, Grace Winker and the Xavier Saints turned the Class 4A state golf tournament into their personal showcase Tuesday.

Bertsch claimed medalist honors with a 3-over-par 149, Winker placed second at 156 and the Saints ran away with the championship by 55 shots at the Ames Golf & Country Club.

Xavier finished with a 36-hole score of 691, leaving Charles City (746) far back on the course.

Bertsch fired two solid rounds at the state meet with a 1-over-par 74 on
Monday and a 2-over on Tuesday. Winker also was consistent with 5-over-par 78's both days.
