Warriors net biggest win in 3 years

The Cedar Rapids Washington boys basketball team could finally laugh a little Friday night and enjoy themselves.

The Warriors belted Jefferson, 57-36, on Hall of Fame Night at Washington for their most lopsided victory in three years.

"I think it was kind of an exhale," said Coach Adam Sanchez. "We've had all this anger built up in close losses and close games where we've played well in stretches. We finally just went out and played well and were able to take a lead and extend a lead.

"I think we finally got to see our guys take a big, deep breath and have some fun playing basketball."

Uhlir leads Lions past Cougars, 73-65

Close games are nothing new for Linn-Mar.

The Lions have had their share of contests this season decided in the final minutes. Lately those swing games have gone against the Lions.

Junior guard Nic Uhlir would have none of that in Friday night’s showdown against Mississippi Valley Conference rival Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

The 6-foot sharpshooter was fouled as he nailed the last of his four 3-point baskets with just over a minute to play. He converted the foul shot to give the Lions a six-point lead and they went on to a hard-fought 73-65 road win over the Cougars.

Linn-Mar tops Kennedy in OT, 67-63

The Sommer twins proved to be too much for the Kennedy Cougars Thursday.

Katie Sommer and Kristie Sommer combined for 42 points as Linn-Mar rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat the sliding ninth-ranked Cougars, 67-63, in overtime at Linn-Mar.

Kennedy (14-7, 8-5) led 35-18 at intermission. Morgan Martin led the way with 18 first-half points and a defense that allowed the Lions only three points in the second period.

“Everything was working well in the first half,” said Martin. “We got away from what we were doing in the first half and didn’t play as well on the defensive end in that second half either.”

It was Senior Night and in the second half it was the Sommer sisters' time to shine. They scored 31 of their combined 42 points after halftime.
