Hembera could be Miss Basketball in 2015

Shelby Hembera of Cedar Valley Christian has been an inspiration this season to her teammates, coaches and the close-knit community that cherishes their small private school on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids.

It's not just the astronomical numbers she's produced on the basketball floor, but that's a good place to start.

Hembera, a 6-foot junior, leads the state in scoring and rebounding at 33.2 points and 15.9 rebounds this year. That's all classes - 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A - and nobody else is really close.

Bybee excels in pole vault at Coe

Sophomore Laura Bybee knows more about balancing than the average student at Coe College.

Bybee started pole vaulting when she was a freshman at Pecatonica High School in Pecatonica, Ill., and now is on the women’s track and field team at Coe, where she has set records in her favorite event.

“I started out in trampoline and tumbling and they always say that people who are in gymnastics are going to be good at it,” she said.

Deutmeyer wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier High School senior Hayley Deutmeyer is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Deutmeyer, a 5-foot-9 guard, is the leading scorer for the Xavier girls basketball team at 13.8 points and she shares the rebounding lead at 4.7 per game. She also has 33 steals, 21 assists and four blocked shots for the Saints, who are ranked No.11 in Class 4A.

Deutmeyer helped Xavier win the Class 4A state title last year as a junior when she averaged 7.6 points and 3.9 rebounds. She is also the starting shortstop for the Xavier softball team and hit .292 with 16 RBIs last season.

Blaha wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Trey Blaha is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Blaha won the 152-pound title at the Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling tournament in Waterloo Feb. 1 to help Prairie win its second straight MVC championship.

Blaha placed sixth at 126 pounds at the 2012 state wrestling tournament and finished fourth at 138 pounds at the state meet last year. He is currently ranked No.4 at 152 pounds by The Predicament heading into the postseason tournaments.

RoughRiders power past Chicago, 4-2

CHICAGO - Cedar Rapids scored a short-handed goal in the first period and on a power-play in the third Sunday and beat Chicago, 4-2, in a USHL game.

The win was the RoughRiders' second in less than 24 hours. They beat Green Bay in a shootout Saturday night in Green Bay, Wis.

The RoughRiders (25-14-2) were playing their third game in as many days. They lost in a shootout at home to Eastern Conference leader Indiana on Friday.
