Warriors snag 51st district title in row

IOWA CITY - The guys who swim for Cedar Rapids Washington know how to pose for team pictures after winning a district title.

They snap into place, display their district banner and smile happily for the cameras.

It's in their blood.

The Warriors captured their 51st district title in a row Saturday at the Mercer Aquatic Center in Iowa City, a streak that began in 1964 before Coach Chris Cruise was born.

No.7 KCC women drop 3rd in row

BOONE - The Kirkwood women's basketball team fell behind by 18 points at halftime Saturday and lost to DMACC, 92-83, in a league contest in Boone.

The seventh-ranked Eagles (18-6, 7-4) have lost three games in a row.

Kirkwood trailed at halftime, 50-32, and fell behind by 20 points in the second half. The Eagles cut the margin to five points with six minutes left, but the rally ended there.

Ariel Sneed led Kirkwood with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Cassidy Clark scored 14 points, Danielle Woolfolk had 13 and Mikayla Fallon 12. Taylor Silva collected seven assists.

Hanna Haynes and Zoe Kelso, a pair of post players for Kirkwood, have been lost for the rest of the season with knee injuries.

Kirkwood men nudged by No.12 DMACC

BOONE - The Kirkwood Eagles had two chances in the final seconds to tie their game against DMACC and force overtime Saturday, but they missed both shots and lost a conference game to the Bears in Boone 85-83.

Joe Tagarelli missed the first chance to tie the game and Taylor Olson missed a tip-in as the game slipped away.

Olson scored 19 points to lead Kirkwood (15-8, 6-4). Tagarelli scored 17, Ajay Lawton had 16 and JC Fuller 15.

Coe women clinch loop tourney berth

Hannah Breitbach scored 14 points to lead a balanced Coe attack and the Kohawks beat Central, 62-47, Saturday in Iowa Conference women's basketball at Eby Fieldhouse.

The win clinched a berth for Coe in the Iowa Conference tournament later this month.

The Kohawks (12-9, 7-3) have won six of their last seven games.

Hembera stars as CVC gets 1st win

SPRINGVILLE - Shelby Hembera had another huge game for the Cedar Valley Christian girls basketball team Saturday, and this time it led to a big party.

Hembera poured in 41 points and grabbed 25 rebounds as the Huskies topped Waterloo Christian, 53-47, for their first victory of the season after 19 straight defeats.

"It was a big win for the parents and a big win for our girls," said Craig Foote, happy to see his team's hard work pay off in a victory.
