Murdock helps Cougars trim J-Hawks

Cole Murdock has a nice touch on a golf course for Kennedy High School, which has one of the top golf programs in the state.

He's developing a nice touch on the basketball floor as well.

Murdock tossed in a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the fourth quarter Friday night to help the Cougars fend off Jefferson, 55-52, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Murdock finished with a team-high 13 points as the Cougars raised their records to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the MVC under first-year coach Jon McKowen.

McDermott, Winker lift Saints by Wash

When the chips were down Friday night on their home floor, the Xavier boys counted on their two aces.

Sharpshooters Adam McDermott and Calvin Winker accounted for 13 points in a fourth-quarter surge that brought the Saints from a seven-point deficit to a come-from-behind 63-58 win over Washington in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

“They're our money players,” said Xavier Coach Ryan Luehrsmann, “and they rose to the occasion. They made their shots when it counted.”

RoughRiders top Chicago in shootout

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders have made several moves lately in an effort to improve their roster. However, there are some talented players who have been here from the beginning as well.

A pair of the newcomers came through offensively in a thrilling 3-2 shootout win over the Chicago Steel Friday night before 2,511 fans at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Frederick Tiffels and Brennan Sanford each recorded their first goal as RoughRiders, but the real star of the night was a guy who has been here all season.

Goaltender Danny Tirone was outstanding between the pipes, turning away 30 of 32 shots in regulation and all three in the shootout to gain his 12th victory of the season.

Balanced Warriors stroll by Saints

The Franklin & Hobbs Show had a stronger supporting cast for the Washington girls basketball team Thursday night.

It helped immensely.

Twelve players scored points for the Warriors as they bumped off the Xavier Saints, 69-47, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Washington.

Dani Franklin netted 22 points and Aleena Hobbs had 15, but the Warriors got another 32 points from the rest of the club to win easily.

Sluggish KCC women roll by 29

Kim Muhl has set the bar extremely high with the Kirkwood women's basketball program with six national titles, so sometimes even a 29-point victory leaves him frustrated.

That was the case Wednesday night.

The fourth-ranked Eagles put on a sluggish performance and irritated their coach in a 78-49 victory over Marshalltown Community College at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood raised its records to 14-3 overall and 3-1 in the ICCAC conference, but Muhl was not happy.
