Baker, May, Allen help J-Hawks win title

Brenden Baker got serious about wrestling when he was in the second grade. In fact, he learned an important lesson that year about the value of making weight.

"I was supposed to wrestle at 46 (pounds), but I weighed 46.2 my first year at peewee state, so I had to bump up to 48," he said Saturday, laughing at the memory. "I didn't cut weight at all, so I wrestled 48 and I ended up getting fifth that year."

Even at a tender age, Baker did not like finishing fifth. He prefers being No.1, and that's his goal this season as a sophomore at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Nothing less than a state title will be satisfactory.

And even with somewhat of a make-shift lineup, the Warriors tuned up for what's ahead by turning in a fine showing Saturday in their own seven-team Jim Voss Invitational.

In a high-powered field with four teams ranked among the top 10 in the state, Washington came in a strong second behind higher-rated Bettendorf, but better than the West Des Moines Valley swimmers that had beaten them in a dual meet a week ago.

Riders win, lose Master to injury

There was plenty of concern on their faces as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders watched teammate Nick Master wheeled from the ice on a stretcher Saturday night.

But the Riders never lost their focus during the approximately 20-minute delay needed to tend to Master, who suffered a left leg injury late in the second period after getting dumped to the ice by Chicago’s Danny Fetzer.

Cedar Rapids scored on the power play awarded on Fetzer’s takedown of Master and added another goal just before the end of the period.

The second-period surge along a perfect period of penalty killing in the third resulted in a 4-1 victory before 2,962 fans at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
