Sommer twins lead Lions by J-Hawks

For the Linn-Mar girls, Friday night was all about redemption.

They admittedly played poorly Tuesday in a 33-point loss at Kennedy and weren't about to let it happen again at home against Jefferson.

“We wanted to redeem ourselves,” said senior guard Kristie Sommer, who led the Lions with 21 points in a 65-49 victory over the J-Hawks.

“This is our house,” added twin sister Katie Sommer, who chipped in with 20 points. “We don't like to lose here.”

Linn-Mar belts Jeff as Olson sits

Linn-Mar guard Jordan Bohannon was disappointed Friday night when he came out for warmups and learned that Jacob Olson would not be playing for Jefferson due to a sprained ankle.

The J-Hawks were disappointed, too.

Bohannon popped in a smooth 20 points and the Lions waltzed past the J-Hawks, 61-33, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at the Jefferson gym.

Kennedy tops Wahawks in MVC opener

The Kennedy coaching staff made a critical defensive adjustment at halftime that proved to be the difference in their 63-54 victory over Waterloo West Friday night at Kennedy.

Waterloo forward Lincoln Conrey, who led all scorers with 28 points, had 17 points at halftime and Kennedy decided to try to deny him the ball the whole second half and it proved to be the difference in the game. Primary responsibility for playing Conrey went to J.B. Bil in the second half with help from everyone else.

“Coach (Jon) McKowen wanted me to be really aggressive and not let him touch the ball,” said Bil. “I would like to be that guy that comes in and shuts down the other team’s leading scorer.”

Xavier girls stopped by Hempstead

The IGHSAU rankings came out this week and in Class 4A the top two teams on the charts were Harlan and Cedar Rapids Xavier, perhaps thinking about a potential rematch of the state finals from a year ago.

There is a lot of time before the postseason begins and though Xavier fans certainly remember last year’s classic in Des Moines, it was time Friday night to have a regular-season encounter between the Saints and the Hempstead Mustangs.

Hempstead came to town and left with a 38-31 victory after holding the Saints to just seven points in the first half.

Cougars go cold, fall to No.3 Wahawks

WATERLOO - The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls seemed to be in full control for the opening four minutes of the second half against Waterloo West.

Then the game pivoted.

The Wahawks, suddenly finding the range from beyond the 3-point arc, rallied to beat the Cougars, 49-42, in a top-10 matchup of unbeaten teams at Siddens Gymnasium.
