Poula named All-American in volleyball

Kirkwood freshman Heather Poula has been named a first team NJCAA Division II All-American in volleyball.

Poula, a 5-foot-10 hitter from West Branch, led Kirkwood with 429 kills this season and had 80 blocks. She ranked 20th in the nation in kills.

Poula helped the Eagles compile a 32-8 record and finish No.7 in the national rankings.

Fuller's slam came with 2:15 left in the nip-and-tuck affair and gave Kirkwood (8-3) some room to breathe at 75-63.

The J-Hawks were led by Jacob Olson with 25 points. His two free throws with 3.7 seconds left iced the victory.

Brandon Horman, co-coach of Jefferson, joined ESPN radio and Scott Unash after the game and emphasized that nothing comes easy, but the J-Hawks made some big plays down the stretch and “When better decisions are made, we came out OK.”

No.9 Cougars escape Pleasant Valley

The Kennedy girls basketball team is undefeated and ranked No.9 in the state, but Coach Tony Vis says the Cougars have not done anything special yet.

Vis was not entirely happy with his club Saturday night after Kennedy escaped Pleasant Valley, 57-53, at the Kennedy gym.

The Cougars have a 4-0 record this season and a shiny spot in the Class 5A polls, but the winless visitors from the Quad Cities nearly pulled off the upset.
