No.2 Saints roll early, rout Ottumwa

Class 3A second-ranked Xavier raced out to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 38-17 at half, then coasted to a 71-48 victory over Ottumwa Tuesday night in a non-conference boys basketball game at Xavier.

Xavier (3-0) displayed an efficient offense and a half-court defense that simply did not allow Ottumwa to penetrate the lane for most of the first half.

Adam McDermott led the way for the Saints, scoring 21 points that included four 3-pointers.

Prairie pounds Mount Pleasant, 60-32

Cedar Rapids Prairie enjoys its status as the Forrest Gump-style "box of chocolates" of the Mississippi Valley Conference.

On Tuesday, the Prairie Hawks beat Mount Pleasant, 60-32, in a boys basketballl game at Prairie High School.

Eleven different Prairie Hawks scored, led by Michael Mims with 13 points. Bryce Meeker added eight points.

Saints free to choose 3A football

The Xavier Saints have until Dec. 20 to inform the Iowa High School Athletic Association if they want to drop from Class 4A to Class 3A for football next season.

There will not be any penalties attached if the Saints decide to switch to Class 3A.

Xavier has received permission from the Mississippi Valley Conference to switch from 4A football to 3A and still retain full membership in the league in other sports, although it would no longer play an MVC football schedule at the 3A level.

MSR surpasses 3 million pageviews

When we began the Metro Sports Report a little less than three years ago, a former colleague asked me how long we planned to keep going with our little project.

Apparently, he thought the MSR was a cute little diversion that would flame out quickly and die like so many other dot.coms have through the years.

Quite honestly, his question irritated me a little. It still does. We didn't start the Metro Sports Report as a diversion or a hobby. We started the company to provide an alternative source of information about the sports world in Cedar Rapids and Marion.

Hembera wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Valley Christian junior Shelby Hembera is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hembera is averaging 31.5 points and 15.3 rebounds for the girls basketball team after four games. She ranks third in the state in all classes in scoring and is tied for first in rebounding.

Hembera, a 6-footer, averaged 16 points and 8.6 rebounds as a freshman. She averaged 22 points and 9.9 rebounds rebounds as a sophomore and made all-state in Class 1A.
