City High runs down Lions, 42-28

IOWA CITY - Iowa City High rushed for 559 yards and six touchdowns on 58 carries Friday night and topped the game Linn-Mar Lions, 42-28, in Iowa City.

Led by Xavier Washpun with 320 yards on 31 carries and supported by Garett Runge’s 131 yards on nine carries, the fifth-ranked Little Hawks (7-1) maintained possession and controlled the game.

Linn-Mar’s opportunity to tie the game at 14 in the second quarter was brought back by penalty. That forced the Lions (2-6) to attempt a 24-yard field goal, which was wide of the mark. It seemed like they could never quite get caught up the rest of the game.

Marion tests Solon before falling

For the Marion High School volleyball team Thursday night against Independence, the third time was the charm.

They weren't so lucky, though, for the fourth time this season with mighty Solon.

Playing on their home court in the eight-team championship bracket of the Wamac Conference tournament, the spirited Indians split two matches.

After losing twice this year in tie-breaking sets to Independence, they finally beat them, 25-19, 25-16. The Class 4A third-ranked Spartans of Solon knocked them off once again, however, but only by scores of 25-22, 25-22.
