Saints bounce back against Wahawks, 40-14

WATERLOO - Cedar Rapids Xavier bounced back.

Waterloo West deflated, and in a hurry.

In other words, the Saints and Wahawks veered in very different directions Friday night at Waterloo Memorial Stadium.

Xavier regrouped after last week's loss to Cedar Rapids Washington and defeated the Wahawks, 40-14.

Solon smothers Marion, 42-0

SOLON - The Marion Indians headed right for the buses after the handshakes on Friday.

They had seen enough of Spartan Field.

No. 8 Solon limited Marion to just 30 total yards in a 42-0 victory Friday in a Class 3A, District 6 showdown.

"We're not stepping forward and we're not physical on the offensive line," Marion Coach Tony Perkins said. "They were more physical than we were."

Central City mauls Huskies, 68-14

Cedar Valley Christian hosted Central City at LaSalle Field Friday night and the Wildcats picked up their first victory of the season, 68-14, in an 8-player, district 4 football game.

David Mosher threw six touchdown passes to lead the Central City offense and Seth Schlotterbeck hauled in three of the six.

Down 14-0 in the first quarter Kenan Ulmer finished off an 11-play, 55-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tom Scroggs to put the Huskies (0-6, 0-5) on the board and with the missed extra point attempt the score was 14-6.

Linn-Mar sweeps MVC races

DUBUQUE - The Linn-Mar Lions were double-trouble for everyone else at the Mississippi Valley Conference cross country meets Thursday at the Dubuque Soccer Complex.

Linn-Mar senior Josh Evans, feeling good again after battling an Achilles tendon problem, won his race by 16 seconds and led the Lions to the MVC boys title.

And the Linn-Mar ladies, getting strong showings from Amber Decker and Maddie Saville, enjoyed their best performance of the season and claimed the girls crown.

"I feel real good," said a happy Todd Goodell, who coaches both squads.

Evans won a race in Aurora, Ill., two weeks ago, but Thursday's conference meet was his first in-state outing of the year. He's not quite 100 percent, due to an overall lack of training, but showed why he's ranked No.1 in the state despite a quiet fall.

Cougars roll by Waterloo East, 42-6

Cedar Rapids Kennedy had two defensive touchdowns before the popcorn was salted Thursday and ended up with a 42-6 victory over winless Waterloo East at Kingston Stadium.

Kennedy (5-2, 3-1) locked in its spot in the Class 4A playoffs with two weeks still left in the regular season.

"Now it's all about seeding," Kennedy Coach Tim Lewis said. "The chance to play at home. Get the seniors to play at Kingston again. There's still a lot riding on these games."

It is a different feeling than a year ago when the Cougars started 0-5 before winning four straight to make the playoffs.

"It's a relief," senior Jacob Shannon said. "But I know we've got to work for it and practice harder now. We want to go as far as we can."
