Petrash has seen NHL fever first-hand

Corey Petrash might have a better chance of playing for the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League some day than actually purchasing season tickets for their games.

Petrash, who plays for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, is from East St. Paul in Manitoba, Canada - just an easy five-minute drive from Winnipeg. He loves the home-town Winnipeg Jets, but so do a lot of people in hockey-mad Canada.

"It's tough to get season tickets," Petrash said. "They're sold out for the next couple of years. There's an 8,000-person waiting list for season tickets. There would have been more on the waiting list, but they had to cut it off somewhere."

Christensen carries big load for Prairie

Mitch Christensen lugged the ball 33 times for 161 yards last Friday night when Prairie upset Cedar Falls, 10-7, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

He has the scars to prove it.

"I've got some turf burns and stuff," he said Wednesday before practice, displaying nasty looking spots on his arms. "That's OK. I played fullback before. I know what it feels like to get hit a lot."

Christensen has delivered his share of punishment as well. He's carried the ball 131 times for 758 yards and five touchdowns this season, making him the leading rusher in the Metro.

Football prevues - Oct. 10-11

It's Week 7 of the football season. Three games remain in the regular season.

The playoff push is on.

Xavier and Kennedy have playoff berths all but locked up, but are playing for higher seeds.

All the rest have work to do, some much more than others.

Muhl welcomes new team at Kirkwood

Kim Muhl was not entirely happy with his women's basketball team at Kirkwood last season.

The Eagles went 28-5 and captured another conference title, but Muhl had trouble communicating with the club at times.

Dysfunctional, he called them.

Some graduated. Some left the program on their own. Some were not invited back.

4A state golf returns to Hunters Ridge

For the first time since hosting the IHSAA Fall State Golf Tournament in 2005, Hunters Ridge in Marion will provide the test for 76 large school golfers Friday and Saturday. The par-72 layout is landscaped over 6,850 yards.

Play is scheduled to start at noon Friday with tee times starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Defending champion and top-rated Waukee, which also claimed the 2011 crown, was bumped from the state field in a tough District Tournament at Cooper Creek in Pleasant Hill Tuesday. Des Moines Roosevelt claimed the district title with a 303. The Waukee Warriors shot a 311 and followed Dowling Catholic (309) and Southeast Polk (310).
