Pair of 5s lead Kernels to win

GENEVA, Ill. – The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored five runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings and came from behind to beat the Kane County Cougars, 10-4, Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The win was the Kernels' sixth in their last seven games. They hold a four-game lead over Quad Cities in the Western Division with 12 games left in the first half.

Kane County jumped out to a 4-0 lead.  Jeimer Candelario’s RBI single in the first inning put the Cougars up, 1-0.

Local players in pro baseball

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers)) - Started in left field Monday and was 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the Quakes' 4-3 loss to Inland Empire. Season stats: G - 48, Avg. - .266, AB - 177, H - 47, HR - 6, RBI - 24, SB - 6.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Entered Monday's game as a defensive replacement at third base and did not bat in the Lugnuts' 2-1 win at Great Lakes. Season stats: G - 44, Avg. - .196, AB - 148, H - 29, HR - 3, RBI - 11, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - The Cubs did not play Monday. Season stats: G - 20, Avg. - .303, AB - 33, H - 10, HR - 1, RBI - 3, SB - 0.

Kernels lose game, Goodrum

GENEVA, Ill. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost more than a game Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning brought home the winning run and ended the Kernels' five-game winning streak.

Earlier shortstop Niko Goodrum was removed from the field by ambulance after suffering a concussion in a homeplate collision. He is expected to miss at least the next seven days.

Kernels pitcher Tyler Jones walked Rock Shoulders, lifting Kane County to a 3-2 win.

KCC volleyball adds 3 Metro players

Kirkwood volleyball coach Jill Williams likes to search locally for new players whenever she can.

This year was no exception.

Williams has signed nine new players for the 2013 season and all of them are in-state recruits. "We are all Iowa," she said proudly.

Three of the players come from the Metro area with Audrey Richards of Xavier, Bre Boote of Kennedy and Becca Bell of Prairie.

"Those are three quality players off of three solid programs. I think that's the kicker," said Williams.
