Young Lions boot Waterloo West, 8-0

The Linn-Mar girls soccer team is young, but these Lions are highly ambitious.

They reached the Class 3A state tournament last year, but lost in the first round. Now they want more. Much more.

The goal is simple.

"To get to the state championship game and win it, for sure," sophomore Jensen Sevening remarked Wednesday night.

Hall of Fame swim coach Krizan dies

Hal Krizan, a Hall of Fame coach who led Cedar Rapids Washington to 11 state titles in boys swimming, died Saturday at age 92.

Krizan founded the Washington swim program in 1956. He led the Warriors to 10 straight titles from 1964 to 1973.

Krizan is a member of the Iowa Swimming Hall of Fame and the National Swimming Hall of Fame.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Pinch hit and delivered an RBI single Wednesday in the Cubs' 9-3 win over the White Sox. Season stats: G - 18, Avg. - .313, AB - 32, H - 10, HR - 1, RBI - 3, SB - 0.

   

Armstrong, Shepard pace No.1 Saints

Xavier girls’ soccer coach Bailey Dorrington hopes to get a more balanced offense before the team’s next game in the Class 2A regional finals, but she wasn’t too upset with Tuesday’s 6-0 win over Independence.

“Ideally, we’d like to spread that out a bit more,” Dorrington said after the regional semifinal at Xavier’s Heco Field. “But right now, it’s you lose, you’re done, I don’t care who scores.”

The top-ranked Saints will host No.9 Waverly-Shell Rock in the regional finals Monday at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Des Moines.

Kernels top Clinton, snap 6-game skid

Whether it was Manager Jake Mauer's closed door clubhouse meeting Monday night that did the trick or something else, the Cedar Rapids Kernels put an end to their six-game losing streak Tuesday with a convincing 9-4 win over the Clinton LumberKings before 1,006 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Kernels have a recipe for success and almost every ingredient was present in Tuesday night's effort.

The Kernels are 26-9 when they score first. Tuesday night, they jumped ahead when catcher Tyler Grimes scored on a Byron Buxton double-play ground ball in the third inning.
