Saints 2nd after 1st day of state golf

AMES - Maddie Bertsch shot a 10-over par 83 to lead Xavier into second place after the first day of the Class 4A state girls golf tournament at Ames Golf & Country Club.

Bertsch is in seventh place in medal play. Grace Winker is tied for 10th after shooting an 87.

Charles City holds a 22-stroke lead over Xavier. The Comets' Jessie Sindlinger fired an 8-under par 65 and holds the top spot in medal play. She has an eight-stroke lead over MacKenzie Black of Independence.

Kamin in 7th at state golf meet

PANORA - Cedar Rapids Washington's MJ Kamin shot a 9-over par 81 Tuesday and is in seventh place after the first round of the Class 5A state girls golf tournament at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

Kamin is five strokes behind Anna Cullinan of Pleasant Valley and Kelsy Shay of Waukee.

Kennedy's Ali Lindo is tied for 12th with an 85. She is nine shots back.

Prairie's Taylor Utter shot a 95 and is tied for 33rd.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers)) - Started in right field Tuesday and was 1-for-4 in the Quakes' 10-2 loss to Lancaster. Season stats: G - 42, Avg. - .260, AB - 154, H - 40, HR - 5, RBI - 22, SB - 5.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Started at first base Tuesday and was 1-for-4 with a run scored in the Lugnuts' 6-5, 10-inning loss at Fort Wayne. Season stats: G - 40, Avg. - .206, AB - 131, H - 27, HR - 3, RBI - 11, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - The Cubs' game Tuesday against the White Sox was postponed by rain. Season stats: G - 17, Avg. - .290, AB - 31, H - 9, HR - 1, RBI - 2, SB - 0.

   

Kernels lose 2 games (and luggage)

New Cedar Rapids Kernels pitcher Hein Robb spent a good part of Monday on airplanes as he hustled into town from extended spring training in Fort Myers, Fla.

Robb, a native of South Africa, arrived safely Monday afternoon. Unfortunately, his luggage got lost somewhere along the way from Fort Myers to Atlanta to Cedar Rapids.

"It figures," Kernels Manager Jake Mauer said with an ironic grin.

When things go wrong for a ballclub, even a new player's luggage gets misplaced on the day he's promoted to the Midwest League.

The struggling Kernels dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Burlington Bees on Memorial Day, 10-3 and 6-3, as their losing streak reached six games before 1,105 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
