Eagles soar to 4th place national finish

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - Kirkwood sophomore Jordan Azbell shot low round of the day with a 5-under par 67 that helped propel the Eagles to a fourth-place in the NJCAA Divivion men's golf tournament Friday at Goose Pond Colony.

Kirkwood was in 10th place after Thursday's third round, but was only six shots out of fourth.

The Eagles teamed up to shoot an 8-over par 296 that was the second lowest team total of the day and vaulted six spots to fourth.

Azbell finished the tournament in 18th place at 4-over par. Teammate Sean Cleary, who shot a 75 Friday, also was 4-over and placed 20th.

Snappers finish sweep of Kernels

BELOIT, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels fell to the Beloit Snappers, 5-4, Friday night before 853 fans in a Midwest League game at Pohlman Field.

Beloit's victory completed a three-game sweep and lifted the Snappers within two games of the Kernels in the Western Division.

Cedar Rapids (30-16) has lost three straight games for the first time this year.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers)) - Started in left field Friday and was 0-for-4 in the Quakes' 4-2 loss to Visalia. Season stats: G - 39, Avg. - .273, AB - 143, H - 39, HR - 5, RBI - 22, SB - 5.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - The Lugnuts were nut scheduled to play Friday. Season stats: G - 37, Avg. - .198, AB - 121, H - 24, HR - 3, RBI - 11, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Started in left field Friday and was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored in the Cubs' 7-4 loss to the Reds. Season stats: G - 14, Avg. - .346, AB - 26, H - 9, HR - 1, RBI - 2, SB - 0.

   

Saints pound Warriors for title

If baseball practice ever gets tedious at Xavier High School this season, Coach Dave Schemmel could simply blow his whistle and tell the guys to line up for a game of touch football.

These Saints would know exactly what to do.

Schemmel has 28 players on his roster this season, and 21 of them played football last fall and helped Xavier reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs and finish with a sparkling 13-1 record.

Many of the same guys who excelled in football have helped the Saints get off to a fast start in baseball, too.

Xavier whipped the Washington Warriors, 11-1, in six innings Thursday night to win the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar complex.

Linn-Mar tops Kennedy for 3rd place

The Linn-Mar Lions defeated Kennedy, 7-4, in the consolation game for third place Thursday in the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar complex.

Ben Hilsenbeck allowed two unearned runs in five innings to collect the victory for Linn-Mar (2-1). He struck out five batters and allowed just two hits.

Austin Stroschein went 2-for-4 for Linn-Mar and scored two runs. Brandan Ollinger went 2-for-4 and Austin Banks drove in two runs.
