KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Started at second base Friday and was 0-for-3 with a walk in the Lugnuts' 3-1 win over Great Lakes. Season stats: G - 33, Avg. - .208, AB - 106, H - 22, HR - 3, RBI - 11, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Did not play Friday in the Cubs' 3-2 loss to the Mets. Season stats: G - 7, Avg. - .214, AB - 14, H - 3, HR - 0, RBI - 0, SB - 0.

 

Evans claims 3200 title at state

DES MOINES - Josh Evans is running free and easy again.

The grimaces have been replaced by grins, the pain supplanted by pleasure.

Evans ran a strong race Thursday and captured the 3200 meter run at the Class 4A state track meet, taking command early and holding off all challengers.

Metro runners also collected a pair of silver medals Thursday. Tristan Beyer of Prairie placed second in the 400 meter dash and Craig Murtha of Xavier finished second in the Class 4A discus.

Jenks adds state 3000 to trophy case

DES MOINES - Stephanie Jenks is just a freshman with braces, but don't be fooled by her sweet demeanor and her willingness to give opponents a helping hand.

The friendly Linn-Mar star is a fierce competitor who loves to win.

She proved it again Thursday.

Jenks captured the 3000 meter run at the Class 4A state track meet with a strong final leg at Drake Stadium, adding to her rapidly growing collection of major titles.

Smith's homer lifts KCC at nationals

CLINTON, Miss. - The Kirkwood Community College Eagles earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Illinois Central Cougars in the NJCAA Division II national softball tournament Thursday on the strength of a two-run home run by Lauren Smith.

With the win, the third-ranked Eagles (57-3) remained undefeated and moved into the third round of the winners’ bracket and are now one of only four teams that remain undefeated in the double-elimination tournament.

Kirkwood, riding a 50-game winning streak, will face No.2 Phoenix College Friday at noon in the winners bracket semifinals.

Moore, Hartman double their fun in regional

A brand-new pairing will participate in the Class 2A girls state tennis tournament in the persons of Cedar Rapids Washington’s Rina Moore and Lilly Hartman.

Moore and Hartman defeated Linn-Mar’s Mackenzie Luehring and Anna Schlueter, 6-2, 6-2, in the regional finals at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center Thursday to fly into the state tournament here May 30-31.

The regional tournament was the first sanctioned doubles play for the pair, “but we play together in the summer a lot,” Hartman said after the match.
