Prairie belts Mustangs, 22-7; Jeff wins

Prairie pounded out 22 runs on 21 hits in four innings to down Mount Vernon, 22-7, in the consolation round of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at Linn-Mar Wednesday night.

Ty Mougin, Caleb Davison and Blake Stallman had three hits for the Hawks (2-1) while Tyler Butz, Mitch Peters, Nic Mougin and Dylan Becker had a pair of hits.

Prairie finished fifth in the tournament.

Eagles 9th after Day 2 of national golf

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - Kirkwood advanced four spots to ninth place Wednesday in the second round of the NJCAA Division II men's golf tournament.

The Eagles shot an even-par 288 as a team on the Goose Pond Colony course. They trail leader South Mountain, Ariz., by 27 strokes.

Kirkwood's Sean Cleary shot a 2-under par 70 and moved up 27 spots to a tie for 20th in medal play.

All of Kirkwood's golfers improved their placing from the first day, when the Eagles were 16-over par as a team.

Kernels trimmed by Beloit, 7-6

BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's Nick Rickles homered twice as the Snappers topped the Kernels, 7-6, Wednesday in a Midwest League game before 371 fans at Pohlman Field.

The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when three straight men reached with two outs. Travis Harrison and J.D. Williams drew back-to-back walks before Jhonatan Arias blooped an RBI single down the left field line.

Beloit took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by Christopher Bostick and Ryan Matthews.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Started at first base Wednesday and was 1-for-4 with a run scored in the Lugnuts' 9-8 win over Lake County. Season stats: G - 37, Avg. - .198, AB - 121, H - 24, HR - 3, RBI - 11, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Pinch hit in the ninth inning Wednesday and popped out in the Cubs' 1-0 loss to the Pirates. Season stats: G - 12, Avg. - .333, AB - 21, H - 7, HR - 1, RBI - 1, SB - 0.

 

Brown's no-hitter sends Saints to finals

Zach Brown cannot touch his toes, but he sure can pitch.

Brown tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts Tuesday night as Xavier blanked Linn-Mar, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the new Linn-Mar complex.

Brown, a senior right-hander, is a strong guy and a good athlete, but he has to bend his knees to reach his toes.
