Kernels could be strong up the middle

(EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the third in a series of preseason position-by-position articles about the 2013 Cedar Rapids Kernels. Next: Outfielders.)

In preparation for the first season of the new affiliation between the Minnesota Twins and the Cedar Rapids Kernels, we’ve embarked on a series of “get to know them” articles.

The intention is to give Kernels fans information about the Twins prospects you may see in a Kernels uniform over the summer, understanding that it’s impossible to know exactly who will fill the Kernels’ roster until just before Opening Day.

In Part 1 of the series, we looked at catchers and in Part 2 we covered corner infielders. In this article, we’ll look at middle infielders who could spend all or part of their summer in Cedar Rapids.

There's no shortage of possible middle infielders at this level of the Twins organization.

Adam (A.J.) Pettersen – Age 24 – Bats R/Throws R

2012: Beloit (Class A – MWL)

G - 93, BA - .248, K - 53, BB - 28, 2B - 13, 3B - 2, HR - 2

In all likelihood, Pettersen will start the year at high-A Fort Myers. However, when you consider all the other middle infielders who could/should play at the high-A level, there may not be room for Pettersen with the Miracle.

Pettersen was selected in the 25th round of the 2011 draft from the University of Minnesota. After just a few games with Elizabethton at the end of the 2011 season, he spent the entire 2012 campaign in Beloit.

He was the epitome of a “utility player” with the Beloit Snappers, playing 2B, 3B, SS, LF and DH. He even pitched an inning.

His offensive stat line would indicate that spending a few more weeks at Class A while he waits for things to shake out a bit in the middle infield further up the organizational ladder wouldn’t be the worst thing for Pettersen.

2013 Kernels anxious to reach Cedar Rapids

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Morgan Hawk is the radio voice of the Kernels on KMRY-AM 1450. This is the first of two reports by Hawk from Florida.)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Teams like the Cedar Rapids Kernels are eagerly waiting to get their respective seasons under way, but the players have already been on the field for more than a month here at spring training.

Players in the Minnesota Twins organization report to spring training in Fort Myers, Fla., each February, and now as March comes to a close they are eagerly ready to leave and get to their respective affiliate.

Spring training, just like the regular season, is a grind. Spring training, just like the regular season, is all about routine.

Eagles soar with Krack of the bat

Yogi Berra, a Hall of Fame catcher with the New York Yankees more than a half-century ago, once declared that you can't think and hit at the same time.

Kirkwood slugger Haylee Krack heartily agrees.

Krack walloped five homers in two games last Saturday at a tournament in Missouri. She belted two homers and drove in four runs against Carl Albert, then collected three homers and 10 RBIs against Oklahoma A&M.

She wasn't looking for a particular pitch or trying to work the count in her favor. Like Yogi, she tried to keep it as simple as possible.

"I felt clear-headed," she said Friday. "I don't think much. It's all reactions from muscle memory.

"It was just a great day. I felt good and I was having fun."

See ball. Hit ball.

"Yeah, pretty much," she claimed.

NCAA baseball champ finds new home at Kirkwood

Most of the baseball players at Kirkwood Community College can only dream about playing in the College World Series in Omaha and winning an NCAA title.

Greg Brodzinski has already done it.

Brodzinski was a freshman catcher at South Carolina in 2011 when the Gamecocks won the NCAA Division I title with a 5-2 victory over Florida before 26,721 fans at TD Ameritrade Park.

Brodzinski was in the bullpen when South Carolina got the final out. He raced onto the field and joined the dogpile.

"I'll never forget that," he said Friday. "It's like in the movies."

Brodzinski anticipated becoming one of Carolina's top catchers in 2012, but a fifth-year senior was granted a special sixth year of eligibility for 2012 and Brodzinski decided to transfer to Coastal Carolina rather than being a reserve with the Gamecocks again.
