Eagles end spring trip with 4-3 victory

VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Kirkwood baseball team ended its successful trip to Florida Tuesday with a 4-3 victory over Westchester (N.Y.) Community College.

The Eagles compiled a 6-2 record in Florida and raised their overall mark to 10-2.

Dairo Gonzalez snapped a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning against Westchester with an RBI grounder that scored Eric Schenck-Joblinske from third base with one out.

Jenks, J-Hawks double up at Dickinson

CEDAR FALLS - Stephanie Jenks ran 15 laps around the UNI-Dome track Monday at the A.D. Dickinson Relays, took one deep breath and then waited for the rest of the girls in the 3000 meter run to cross the finish line so she could shake their hands.

The Linn-Mar freshman had to wait a while to greet them all.

Jenks won the 3000 in 10:16.27 in a breeze. She clocked a 9:49.24 at the same distance last week at a major meet in Ames when she faced serious competition from Anna Holidman of Waverly-Shell Rock, but there wasn't much of a challenge Monday.

Marion's Steffeck led Penn to title tilt

Keith Steffeck's goals were no different from those of many young basketball players.

Growing up in Marion, he dreamed of one day playing basketball at the University of Iowa and possibly playing for a national championship.

Steffeck accomplished half that goal.

The 6-foot-9, 220 pound Marion High School graduate led William Penn to the NAIA Division II national title game last week, scoring 12 points in a 73-59 loss to Cardinal Stritch.

Krista Johnson new Xavier volleyball coach

Krista Johnson has been named volleyball coach at Xavier High School, athletics director Mike Winker announced Monday.

Johnson is an assistant coach at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. She has been at Northern State the last two seasons. Before that she was an assistant coach at Mount Mercy University from 2006 through 2010.

Johnson played college volleyball at the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated from there in 2002.

Johnson is a Cedar Rapids native and was a standout prep player for Jefferson.

Krack hits two more homers for Kirkwood

FAYETTE, Mo. - Haylee Krack belted two home runs and drove in five runs Monday as the Kirkwood softball team defeated the Central Methodist junior varsity, 15-7, in Fayette, Mo.

The Central Methodist JV squad won the first game, 4-3.

Krack hit five homers for Kirkwood on Saturday in two games.
