Kirkwood women KO'd by Iowa Central

KEOKUK - The regional finals of the women's junior college basketball tournament were held at an elementary school in Keokuk before 96 fans, with coaches and players for both teams sitting on the front row of hard metal bleachers.

That's where the Kirkwood Eagles, once ranked No.2 in the country, saw their promising season come to a disappointing end.

Iowa Central Community College went on an astonishing 19-0 run in the second half and bounced Kirkwood, 71-65, for the Region XI title.

Iowa Central (24-8) advanced to the NJCAA Division II national tournament for the second time in three years. Kirkwood (28-5) went home with an empty feeling.

Kirkwood men ousted by Ellsworth

The Kirkwood men's basketball team ran out of patches and bandaids Friday night.

The Eagles darn near ran out of players, too.

It was that kind of a season for Kirkwood, filled with injuries and player defections, but the Eagles went down fighting as best they could.

Kirkwood lost to Ellsworth, 70-65, in the regional semifinals Friday night at Johnson Hall to finish a topsy-turvy season with a 19-13 record.

The Eagles began the game with only nine players in uniform. Three Eagles fouled out, leaving only six eligible players at the end of the game, and one of them (Devan Douglas) has played with a torn meniscus in his left knee for much of the season.
