Olson nets 20 as Kirkwood belts SCC

Taylor Olson had a lot to deal with during his first semester at Kirkwood this fall.

First he hurt his ankle before practice began, hindering his preparation for the season. A former girlfriend was tragically killed in a car accident Oct. 15, dealing him a deep personal setback. And he was thrust right into the starting lineup at point guard as a freshman, given the responsibility of running the team.

"The first semester is always a big-time adjustment anyway," Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester noted Wednesday night. "That was heavy."

Olson did okay during the first semester, but the Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad was more of a complementary player than a star in November and December. That could be changing.

Olson drilled six 3-pointers Wednesday and poured in 20 points as the Eagles thumped Southeastern Community College, 75-62, at Johnson Hall.

Bianca Dufelmeier led the Eagles with 16 points, with 14 of her markers coming in the second half. She also collected five assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Dorrington named Xavier girls soccer coach

Bailey Dorrington has been named the new girls soccer coach at Xavier High School.

She replaces Doug Graham, who resigned after leading the Saints to three consecutive state titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Graham will remain with the program as an assistant coach, but wants to devote more time to his business interests.

Dorrington was an all-state soccer player at Xavier and was a member of three state championship teams. She also helped the Saints win two state titles in basketball.

Koelling lifts Cougars by Saints, 44-41

Ryan Luehrsmann did not know a whole lot about Kennedy senior Johnathon Koelling prior to Tuesday night's basketball game at Kennedy.

He does now.

Koelling collected a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Cougars trimmed Xavier, 44-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference affair.

Xavier girls stick it to Kennedy

With a lineup full of new players, wily Xavier girls basketball coach Tom Lilly is going back to some old ways that worked in the past.

“We learn from former players who come back and ask about some ins and outs we used to use,” Lilly said Tuesday night after his novice Saints patiently used an old-school inside/outside game to turn back the visitors from Kennedy, 60-51.

Since senior starting guard Kayla Armstrong is the only player on the roster who had extensive court time last year, Lilly runs fresh legs in and out like a traffic cop.
