Washington swimmers top Cedar Falls

Ryo Ueno, Logan Barnes and Jared Thorson won individual events Thursday as Cedar Rapids Washington defeated Cedar Falls, 106-64, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet at Washington.

Ueno won the 200 freestyle, Barnes captured the 100 butterfly and Thorson took the 100 freestyle.

The Warriors also won the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Metro Sports Report wins baseball award

There's nothing better than sitting in the sunshine and watching a good baseball game. As it turns out, you can win an award for it.

The Metro Sports Report has been selected to receive a District Media Award from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association for 2012, the IHSBCA announced last week.

Scott Byers of the Sheldon Sports Leader is the winner in the West District, Dan Holm of the Ankeny Register & Press Citizen is the winner in the Central District, and the Metro Sports Report has been saluted as the winner in the East District.

Abby Herb quietly signs with Mount Mercy

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Abby Herb did not want any big parties at school or any press conferences when she signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Mount Mercy University.

She's excited about the next step in her life and looking forward to playing for the Mustangs, but she's kind of shy and wanted to sign quietly last month.

"I just wanted to sign the paper without a bunch of people there and get all nervous and my hand would be shaking," she said.

Eagles belt No.8 Illinois Central for title

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - The Kirkwood Eagles completed an impressive performance at the Illinois Central Classic Sunday afternoon by topping No.8 Illinois Central, 59-41, in the championship game of the eight-team holiday tournament.

Kianna Jacobs collected a double-double for the seventh-ranked Eagles (13-3) with 15 points and 11 rebounds and made the all-tournament team. Alexis Fitzpatrick also made the all-tournament team for Kirkwood.

Kirkwood began the tournament Friday with a 75-60 victory over Cincinnati State. The Eagles drubbed top-ranked Lake Michigan, 61-41, in the semifinals Saturday and won all three of their games by an average of 17.7 points.

Kirkwood women drub No.1 Lake Michigan

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - The Kirkwood Eagles walloped top-ranked Lake Michigan, 61-41, in the semifinals of the Illinois Central Classic Saturday.

Kianna Jacobs led the seventh-ranked Eagles (12-3) with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Kirkwood led by just two points at halftime, 29-27, but the Eagles used a 16-3 spurt at the start of the second half to take command. Kirkwood held Lake Michigan (10-2) to just 14 points in the second half.

Kirkwood will face No.8 Illinois Central in the championship game of the holiday tournament Sunday at 4 p.m.
