No. 3 Eagles roll by Black Hawk

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Luke Appel scored 20 points Saturday as the third-ranked Kirkwood Eagles rolled by Black Hawk College, 93-60, in a non-conference basketball game.

Appel poured in 18 points in the first half, but played only a few minutes in the second half after being inadvertently hit in the face. Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen said Appel could have returned, but felt it was not necessary with the Eagles holding a comfortable lead.

All-American Doug Wilson did not play Saturday. Petersen said Wilson suffered a hip injury against Iowa Lakes last Wednesday and was withheld as a precautionary measure. He expects Wilson to play when Kirkwood hosts Ellsworth on Wednesday.

Bailey Dee scored 12 points for Kirkwood, which raised its record to 18-2. Allante Pickens made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points. Devonte Thedford had 10 points.

Mustangs rally with 'D' and 19 3's

The Pioneers from MidAmerica Nazarene put on a clinic during the first  half at the Hennessey Recreation Center Saturday.

They hit just about every shot they took. If they missed, they usually  grabbed the offensive rebound and scored again. The Mount Mercy  defenders were typically a step behind.

The Pioneers pounded Mount Mercy on the backboards in the first half,  built a 16-point lead and appeared headed to an easy victory over the  Mustangs.

Mount Mercy Coach Aaron Jennings was not happy.

"We talked at halftime about having some pride," he said. "You can't  get pushed around in a basketball game."

The Mustangs listened and responded.

Mount Mercy stiffened its defense, hit a string of clutch 3-pointers  and rallied to defeat MidAmerica Nazarene, 89-82, in a Heart of  America Conference game.
