William Penn tops Mustang women

OSKALOOSA - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team lost to 20th-ranked William Penn, 66-42, in a Heart of America Conference game  Thursday night.

Lakin Goodman led the Mustangs (5-12, 1-10) with 11 points. The  Mustangs scored only three points in the third quarter and were held  to their lowest total of the season.

Vashti Nwagbaraocha scored 18 points for William Penn (15-1, 10-1).

Sartorius boosts No. 5 Eagles by DMACC

Brady Sartorius enjoyed a fabulous career at Mount Pleasant High School and was looking forward to a big freshman campaign at Kirkwood, but then the injuries set in.

He injured his back during the preseason, then hurt his ankle and Achilles tendon during a game in December and was sidelined again. All told, he missed five games and had trouble getting into the flow of things.

Sartorius is still not 100 percent in the pink, but he sure looked good Wednesday night.

Sartorius popped off the bench and popped in a career-best 17 points to help the fifth-ranked Eagles pull away from 17th-ranked DMACC, 92-76, in an ICCAC conference game at Johnson Hall.

Sartorius made four 3-pointers and contributed three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the backcourt.

"He was huge," said Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen. "That's the Brady Sartorius we were expecting. Obviously he had a tough go of it in the first semester with injuries.

"I'm really proud of him for coming back and being ready to go. Hopefully we'll have him the rest of the year."

No. 10 KCC women knock off DMACC

When the Kirkwood women's basketball team is good, the Eagles are very, very good with unselfish passes, good shooting and a willingness to listen to Coach Kim Muhl.

When the Eagles struggle ... well, here's what Muhl had to say about that Wednesday night.

"They've got to learn to be coached and quit being babies and grow up," he remarked. "You can put that in the paper."

The 10th-ranked Eagles were very, very good in the third quarter and rode a 30-point outburst in that stanza to a 66-37 victory over DMACC in an ICCAC conference game at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood scored only 22 points in the first and led 22-17 at intermission. Muhl ripped into his players at halftime and they came out with a vengeance.

What did Muhl tell them?

"Quit fighting me on what needs to be done on a daily basis," he revealed. "It's not 'cool' just to be on the floor. You've got to become nasty and dirty and play harder. And execute.

‘A Sapir Sampler’ features the great outdoors

A collection of articles – 167 of them – by veteran and prize-winning  author Glenn Sapir has been thoughtfully selected and published in a  new, leatherette-bound volume, “A Sapir Sampler: Favorites by an  Outdoor Writer.”

Sapir has enjoyed a long and storied career, not only having written  for a wide variety of publications, but also having been the first  person to serve on the editorial staffs of what was considered “The  Big Three” of outdoor magazines – Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and  Sports Afield. He also contributed the outdoor column to The Journal  News (N.Y.) and its predecessors for 27 years.

Sapir’s writing has been recognized with an impressive list of awards,  including lifetime excellence in craft honors from the Outdoor Writers  Association of America and the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor  Writers. He has been inducted into the New York State Outdoorsmen’s  Hall of Fame.

“Having retired from full-time work in 2014, after first beginning my  career in 1970, I had amassed a collection of more than a thousand  feature articles and columns I’d written for a variety of magazines  and newspapers,” Sapir said. “I wanted to select some of my favorites  from 1970 until, as it turned out, 2018, and share them with family,  friends and interested readers.”

What was originally envisioned to be a small collection grew to a  480-page book. The articles are divided into four categories – Family  and Friends, Destinations and Adventures, Interesting People and Mixed  Bag – and the articles range from fishing for char in an Arctic Ocean  tributary to angling for peacock bass in the Amazon basin.
