Kirkwood drops spirited battle to Indian Hills

The Kirkwood Eagles got into a horserace with a bunch of thoroughbreds from Indian Hills Community College Tuesday night at Johnson Hall.

The thoroughbreds won by a nose, 95-88.

"Man, a lot of horses in that stable," Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester whistled after the 40 minutes of mayhem had ended.

Kennedy defense stifles Linn-Mar girls

Kennedy stepped up its defensive play and kept its record clean, beating host Linn-Mar 49-31 Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup of Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball  foes.

Linn-Mar (2-3) led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, but an aggressive Kennedy defense only allowed one point in the second quarter and only 18 more points in the second half.

Kirkwood women blast Ellsworth, 82-37

IOWA FALLS -- Kirkwood scored 52 points in the second half and blew away Ellsworth, 82-37, Tuesday night in women''s junior college basketball.

The Eagles (8-2, 1-0) knocked down 5 of 6 3-pointers in the second half.

Kirkwood led 30-19 at halftime. The Eagles opened the second half with a 38-6 run that blew the game open.

Kiana Jacobs led Kirkwood with 11 points. Lexi Hobbs had 10 and former Xavier prep Krissi Tow tallied nine. Thirteen Eagles broke into the scoring column.

Drew Wall playing for heavenly team now

Kennedy High School principal Mary Wilcynski was looking forward to writing a college letter of application for Drew Wall some day.

She would have praised his 4.1 GPA, his numerous extracurricular activities, his community service, exemplary character, leadership and great spirit.

Sadly, Dr. Wilcynski never got to write that letter. Drew Wall died peacefully at his home on Nov. 26 after a five-year battle with cancer. He was 16 years old and touched many lives.

Parry, Hubbell, French in BCS bowls

It's always more fun to watch the major bowl games on TV when you know somebody who's playing for one of the teams, so this year's BCS contests should be great fun for Metro football fans.

David Parry from Linn-Mar, Ryan Hubbell from Marion and Christian French from Kennedy will be headed to three of the most prestigious bowl games in the country later this month to play for their college teams.

Parry could be starting for Stanford in the Rose Bowl at defensive tackle, Hubbard will play for Louisville in the Sugar Bowl at tight end, and French will be in uniform for Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl and could play at defensive end.
