J-Hawks edged by Iowa City West on mat

Iowa City West won the final match by forfeit to escape Jefferson, 35-31, Thursday night in Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks flattened Waterloo East in their other meet.

West was ranked sixth in the Class 3A preseason poll by Predicament magazine. The Trojans held a 29-10 lead when the J-Hawks started to roll.

Kirkwood falls without Wagemester

Kirkwood assistant coach Quincy Young had a lengthy telephone conversation with Doug Wagemester after the Eagles played Marshalltown Wednesday night, giving the absent head coach a full report on what happened at Johnson Hall.

It wasn't good.

Kirkwood fell behind by 20 points in the second half and lost to the undefeated Tigers, 71-57, in a non-conference junior college basketball game.

Peacocks proud to sign Hanna, Roth

You might see Brian Dolan and his assistant coaches at more and more Mississippi Valley Conference basketball games in the weeks and years to come.

Dolan is the head coach at Upper Iowa University in Fayette and he's looking for more good players from bigger schools.

He began building the program at UIU seven years ago with guys from Class 1A and 2A schools, because that's where he could get players. He still cherishes the smaller schools, but is getting increasingly involved with Class 3A and 4A athletes.

Schulte family tops all-Metro football

Xavier quarterback Reggie Schulte was named the Player of the Year on the 2012 All-Metro Football Team on Monday.

Xavier Coach Duane Schulte, who is Reggie's father, was named the Metro Coach of the Year along with his assistant coaches with the Saints.

The Schultes helped Xavier compile a 13-1 record this season and reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs.

Visitation, services set for Drew Wall

The visitation and services for Drew Wall have been arranged.

Wall, 16, is the Kennedy High School sophomore who died Monday after a five-year battle with cancer. He was a member of the Kennedy golf program, among his many activities.

The visitation will be Sunday at the Black Box Theater at Kennedy from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The school is located at 4545 Wenig Road NE. Visitors should use the north entrance to the school.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at the New Covenant Bible Church on Monday at 2 p.m. The church is located at 3090 North Center Point Road. Take exit 28 off I-380 at County Home Road and go east to North Center Point Road.
