$5,000 reward offered in Roundtree case; services set

A $5,000 reward is being offered for the arrest of the person (or persons) responsible for the shooting death of Latasha Roundtree, the Cedar Rapids Police Department announced Tuesday morning.

A citizen contacted the Linn County Crime Stoppers to offer the $5,000 reward, which would be in addition to a regular Crime Stoppers reward.

Roundtree, 19, was shot Saturday night and pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. Sunday. She graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School this past spring and played for the girls basketball team.

Visitation for Roundtree will held Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Teahen Funeral Home at 3100 F Ave. NW. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Gospel Tabernacle Church at 2531 42nd St. NE.

No. 8 Xavier spikers sweep Warriors

The Xavier High School volleyball team got a healthy dose of confidence Saturday when it defeated Kennedy at the Dubuque Invitational.

The Saints kept it going Tuesday night against Washington.

Xavier swept the Warriors, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Washington with a strong performance.

Shipley named Linn-Mar softball coach

Mike Shipley, an assistant baseball coach at Linn-Mar High School for 13 years, has been named the new head softball coach at the school.

Shipley coached the sophomore baseball team from 2009 until this past season. He also worked with the varsity and freshman teams in previous years.

Shipley succeeds Jon Harms, who resigned as softball coach.

Cougars, Saints sweep MVC golf honors

The best boys golf teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference are from Cedar Rapids.

It's not even close.

The Kennedy Cougars ran away with top honors in the Mississippi Division Monday with a strong showing at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Dubuque, winning their division by 50 strokes.

The Xavier Saints, meanwhile, completed a dominating performance in the Valley Division at Hunters Ridge in Marion, taking their division by 44 shots.

Kennedy and Xavier also had the top individuals this season in conference action.

Latasha Roundtree shot and killed

Former Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball player Latasha Roundtree was shot and killed in southwest Cedar Rapids Saturday night, the Cedar Rapids police department confirmed Sunday morning.

"The victim of the shooting that occurred in the 600 block of 16th Avenue SW has been identified as Latasha Roundtree (19) of Cedar Rapids," Lt. Craig Furnish of the police department announced in a news release. "The victim was pronounced dead at 0305 hours on today's date.

"The Cedar Rapids Police Department is investigating the case as a homicide," he said. "Any further information will be released by the Cedar Rapids Police Department's Public Information Officer."
