No. 4 Saints expect test from Cougars

The Xavier Saints have cruised to four straight victories this season and have walloped their opponents by a combined score of 198-35.

Coach Duane Schulte isn't sure if he wants a tough game to challenge his team or not, but he's convinced he's going to get one from Kennedy.

"I think we're going to be tested this Friday night," he said. "Kennedy is a good football team. They're big and fast."

Prep football prevues - Sept. 21

The Battle for 42nd Street.

Kennedy versus Xavier.

Xavier and its high-powered offense, stifling defense and lofty state ranking.

A cornered Kennedy club that is winless in four games and facing the best team it has played to date.

Kennedy has not beaten Xavier in a regular-season game since a 28-21 win in 2007, although the Cougars pulled a shocking 11-7 win in the 2010 playoffs.

Twins join robust history in C.R.

One of the things I discussed with the Minnesota Twins delegation this past week during their visits here was the history and longevity of minor league baseball in Cedar Rapids.

The Twins and the Kernels signed a four-year working agreement Wednesday.

Sievertsen is No. 1 kicker in FCS football

CEDAR FALLS - Tyler Sievertsen is a smart guy. He can do the math in his head, but he'd rather not.

Every time he makes a field goal for the University of Northern Iowa, he improves his status as the most accurate place-kicker in FCS football.

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy grad is 22 for 24 the past two seasons for 91.7 percent, which makes him the most accurate kicker in the country among active players in his division, according to the UNI sports information department.

A few of the best I have seen

A couple of recent events prompted me to take a trip down memory lane.

One of those events occurred a couple of weeks ago during the Prairie-Kennedy football game at Kingston Stadium. The second took place last Friday night, also at Kingston Stadium.

The first was provided by Prairie's Demetrius Harper on the field, and the second was a ceremony for former J-Hawk Blake Tiedtke.
